18secs a ball for proper stroke
200 balls per hr takes 5000hrs
2hrs a day=712hrs a year
5000 hrs / 712hrs = 7years

That's a lot of stroking!

That's probably why all pros play for more than 2 hours/day. Especially when first starting out.

2hrs a day=728hrs a year
5000 hrs / 728 hrs = 6.868 years

That's a lot of stroking!

But you're taking a day or two off each year!

I was always told that smart practice reduces the total amount needed. So knowing what you are stroking for has a place but not sure how you could figure that in.If you had a perfect shot picture goal thats one thing. If you had Spin delivery to the same shot picture that is another, then you would have a requirement of acceptable fundamentals that is gained during the process that would be a minimum. The fact that many a young player with perfect pool playing instincts can do so well in a short period of time is a testament that the road to Pool Bliss, can be shortened.

I think I may have crossed that HAMB Threshold since returning to Pool. I usually play daily for 3-5 hours a day and have been at it for a little over 4 years. Sure, there has been a good deal of grabasstic behavior along the way, but I think I can get my HAMB Keychain.

I do believe in HAMB though. See, cuz HAMB is only one letter removed from HAM (first cousin to Bacon) and that extra letter is B, Bacon begins with the letter B... Bacon is good... I love Bacon. HAMB works.

I think one of the major misunderstandings of the 10,000 rule.... is that the 10,000 hours much actually be involved in directed practice. Most of the people that I know that go to Pool Halls and play pool, spend very little time practicing. If you are playing with someone else, you cut your practice time in more than half (usually). Playing at a tournament for six hours, probably doesn't really count for six total hours because much of that time is probably spent waiting between matches, etc......

I think a great way to practice is to decide on a specific number of balls that you will make during a practice session. You don't have to count misses at all.... Just count how many balls you pocket...

The thing about HAMB is that you have to be teaching yourself something during those 10,000 hours. It's about focus and concentration. So it's 10,000 hours of learning, not just hitting balls.
