Handicap systems

I'm completely new to competitive pool, and I've been hearing a lot of numbers being thrown around which I figure were handicaps. However, I'm unfamiliar with the various systems and how they are calculated. Could somebody provide me a run-down of the commonly used formats in North America and how hcp is determined?

The different leagues have different scales and methods for computing handicaps. I would suggest you look on the various websites for the information you want. I do know that the APA uses a system known as "The Equalizer" and is roughly based on your performance such as number of balls per inning (your turn at the table). Not much help here but the websites will provide more in-depth information.
You will enjoy your pool league experience and make many new friends.

With out specifics,,,, basically handicap is calculated by your statistics on your ability to win games against other players. It takes into consideration the ability of the players that you beat.

APA handicap is somewhat based on the number of times at the table it takes you to win a game. Also the number of defensive shots that you play.

Obviously it is done to put all players on an even field. To be successful, you need to win more than 50% of your matches. Win too many and you go up a level ....

It is necessary so that new, inexperienced players have a chance to win. New players would soon get discouraged and quit if they never won a game.

If the new player feels that he/she doesn't have a chance to win, the leagues would die out. If the leagues die out then the APA, BCA, TAP, and other organizations would fold up for lack of money.

SSOOOOOOOOOOOO..... it all really comes down to money.... doesn't it???

First of all, what numbers are you talking about? Are you talking about league handicaps or private match ups?
