Handicapping A Straight Pool League

Here's a new chart I've developed to handicap my 14.1 league. We will begin in about two weeks, so I would like your opinions on it before I put it in practice.

The players will be given the top chart only. The other three charts are developed solely to prove that the separation between rankings is fair and consistent.

General goals of my system were to:

1) keep the length of the matches (in time) reasonable (it seems reasonable that when 2 lower ranked players play, the race would be shorter),

2) each change in rank represents a consistent change in handicaps (in general, if you go up/down one rank you will give out/get 6-8% more balls in handicap than you did before), and

3) provide a wide number of rankings to accomodate ALL speeds (OK, we aren't expecting a John Schmidt to play).

Example: Let's say an "A+" is playing a "B" player. The length of the race is read off the top of the chart by looking above the higher of the two ranks ("A+" = 150 points in this case). Looking down the "A+" column until we intersect with the lower ranked player's row ("B" in this case), we get the number "45". That means the "A+" player gives the "B" player 45 points going to 150...a 30% handicap.

Man, that looks pretty solid. I'm in a straight pool league that plays 2 games to 50, with the handicap being 90% of the difference between the players' averages. So I may have to spot someone 25-35 balls in a race to 50. I like your system because the lower ranked player still has to make some balls, and the higher caliber players just have to make more balls (which I would think is a better test for them). How do you determine when someone goes up or down in rank though?

We had the ratchet set at 21 the first time out. We moved the winner up 1 rank and the loser down 1 rank if the win differential was 21 balls or more. That was WAY too aggressive, so we are tweaking it for the next go 'round.

Our bonus points were too aggressive as well (1 point for 10-20 point win, 2 points for 21-30 point win, & 3 points for 31+ point win). You were awarded 2 points for a win.

Our next session will go like this:

If it wasn't 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive I would head over there to play in your league. Definitely like the way your going to run it.

What I have learned from my 14.1 league: if you want your overall game to improve, join a 14.1 league!

I went back and looked at the statistics gathered over my two 14.1 league sessions and they show exactly what I hoped they would...my 14.1 game is improving.

As a little background, for the last 8-10 years I've mostly played 9B, 8B, & 1P. My favorite game, 14.1, had fallen out of favor and my game rusted up. I was "happy" to put two racks together prior to developing the 14.1 league.

A decade ago I had an all-time high run in the high 70's and could regularly run 2-3-4 racks, but I was now NO THREAT to run much more than 1/2 that.

Enter the 14.1 league & my game has progressed nicely. Here are my high runs so far:

Session#1:
Wk1: 10
Wk2: 21
Wk3: 14
Wk4: 14
Wk5: 19
Wk6: 25
Wk7: 13
Wk8: 28
Wk9: 18
Wk10: 22

After session 1, I practiced some more and ran a 46.

Session 2:
Wk1: 21
Wk2: 18
Wk3: 32
Wk4: 29
Wk5: 18
Wk6: 42
Wk7: ???

In practice I've put together a run of 68. I'm hoping to set a new all-time high soon.

So, you can see I've shown consistent improvement. My high runs have progressed from 1 rack to 1.5 racks to 2 racks to 2.5 racks to 3 racks....

My advice: GO OUT & START YOUR OWN LEAGUE NOW!

Nice work!

I came up with the MNSPA system, and have used the 14and1.com system as well.

My own system is a bit more simple, but seems to work. I wouldn't mind trying something else out new though.

Cool

Looks like a great system. Rep for posting and promoting the game of 14.1 as it is now my favorite game as well.

The only thing that looks funny to me is that you have + and - handicaps for all letter handicaps except D. Why is this? D, C-, C, C+, B-, etc. If you're breaking it down that much I would expect to see D- and D+ as well.

As a league director I have noticed that the more you break the handicaps down the more complaints about them you receive. Handicapping is a little easier to deal with if you have fewer ratings.

Chris: Honestly, it looks funny to me too...but that's what we started with and it just stuck. Really, the letters assigned are arbitrary and we could have assigned numbers for that matter...1 thru 14.

Thanks for the kinds words everyone. Running a league can be a hair-pulling experience. I am thoroughly pleased to say that I am NOT fielding complaints about my scheme. It's a pleasure to run the league!!! How many leagues can say that!

Sure, we had some complaints during the first session, but we listened. New ideas were incorporated for the second session and everyone seems happy.

If everyone is having fun including the league director then it's definitely a success. Good luck with the league.
