HANSHEW FORWARD EXTENSION

I've got one and I like it quite a bit. It fits snuggly on a variety of diameters of shafts. My favorite part of the forward extension is that you use your normal shooting geometry and stroke with it.

Any questions about it?

thanks for the reply
does it mark up the shaft?
does stay straight with the shaft?
whats it made out of?
its feel ie hit /power?

Cool! Nice to hear about it. It's a really different design. At first I thought the design was dumb, but honestly I'm starting to like it. It's definitely thinking out of the box but it seems like it would work well.

Apologies, I missed your questions.

From what I remember Hanshew's wife telling me when I bought it, they are on the third or fourth iteration now and the rubber ring material was one of the things they changed because there were some issues with marking in earlier versions. At worst, I have had zero issues on either CF or wood shafts in the month or so that I've owned it.

I haven't checked it in a straighness checker, but to the naked eye, it is straight on the shaft. I suppose I could check that later.

It is basically a cut down CF shaft and fit with a rubber ring and a compression fitting to secure it to the shaft. I'd guess that it's a section out of the middle of a conical taper shaft. Seybert's description might tell you more about the construction.

I haven't noticed any significant change in the feel of the hit, but I usually shoot with a Revo with a Zan Hybrid Max tip so take that for what it is. Hanshew does sell them with different tips and you could probably get a cue mechanic to put whatever tip you like on it later.

I started out with it on my shooting cue, but I found I like using it best on my break stick because the radius of the tip is very flat and I feel that puts more surface area between the tip and the extension which should give the best transfer of power. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that the interior cavity of the forward extension is flat or minimally radiused to accomodate different tip radiuses.

All in all, I like using it a little better than a rear extension. The shot feels more natural because your bridge hand is on the shaft, not the forearm of the cue. I have used the forward and the rear extension at the same time on longer shots and it works also.

no final decisions regarding how much i will use it
first time i seemed to get aot of deflection but that settled down to manageable as the tip got broken in
it doesnt seem to always be straight
i have to figure out what i am doing wrong

First, what diameter is your shaft? Seems like there could be some variation in a smaller diameter shaft. I've been shooting with 12.9s of late so that's all I've shot on so far. I'll throw an 11.8 in my bag and see if it makes a difference.

Off the top of my head, I'd say take the fastener off and make sure the rubber insert is straight. I have had it stick a bit when trying to remove it. I've had to take the fastener off then work the extension off. If that happens, it could possible be misaligned.

From there, push the extension all the way down until you can feel it touch the cue tip. Then tighten the fastener.

I also just put the forward extension on both a 13mm break CF and a 11.8 CF playing shaft and then put them on a straightness checker. I found that it was almost perfectly straight on the 13mm with little effort but there was a little wobble on the 11.8mm.

Additionally, on the 11.8, it feels like the interior of the extension is stepped. I'm guessing, but I'd say there are two levels that tips can go into. One is probably 12.4 and above and then there is a smaller ring higher up. If you move it around and push the extension down slightly, you can feel and hear it in a quiet room. There was still a little wobble there but it should be manageable.

The best way I found to put it on an 11.8 was to line up the tip in the top of the extension, then hold the shaft vertically and put light pressure on the shaft and forward extension while tightening the fastener. Also, tighten it as much as you can. It's a compression fitting, so it would seem like the tighter it is, the more straight it should be. I could get it very nearly straight with this method.

That said, I would still recommend putting it on a break cue especially if the tip diameter is larger. Further testing on my end shows that the larger the diameter, the easier it is to put on straight. It's not always perfectly straight but it's pretty close.

Edited to add: here's James talking a little about how it fits:
