In Chinese, the word for fish (鱼, yú) sounds the same as the word for abundance or surplus (余, yú). This homophone is why the Chinese eat fish on Chinese New Year's eve dinner, and basis for the popular Chinese New Year greeting, "Nian Nian You Yu" (年年有鱼/余), which translates to "May you have abundance/surplus year after year," driving the tradition of eating fish to ensure prosperity. If you're a pool player, play a fish for good luck.
