Hard hitting custom cue solution

I am a older novice player and have been shooting a McDermott EF-35. I recently purchased a custom cue that I initially thought would work out but now am having a hard time shooting.

In particular it has a really hard hit. I think part of my problem is that I am getting more cue ball speed for the same stroke than what I used to get out of the McDermott.

I think I want to soften the hit. In time, my stroke might be able to accomodate a hard hit but not right now... The cue has a unique ferrule. It is made of Corian.

I replaced my McDermott ferrule with a melamine ferrule and put a Moori soft on it (Recommendation of the cue maker doing the work).

I am considering changing out the ferrule and the unknown tip (layered but that is all I know) for a melamine/Moori combination.

Might the ferrule be a major contributor to the hardness of the hit or would it be mostly the tip itself.

Also, I know ferrule material is a personal choice (and Ivory in not one of them for personal reasons), is there another material that might be a better pick considering my limited skill level at this time.

Thanks as always for any thoughts.

You could try changing to a PVC ferrule even ABS which will give you a softer hit, coupled with an Elk Master or LePro. Melamine is still harder than the two above mentioned ferrules.

Depends also on the shaft taper you have. Start with the ferrule/tip first then see how it feels.

I tried Corian ferrules many years ago and they had a very phony feeling click to the hit. If you liked the Melamine then by all means change to it. You have one of the worse playing ferrule types I have ever tried. Corian has been around for years and proved a failure for ferrules in the 80's. I guess some memories or experience don't go that far back and now someone else wants to try it thinking they have come up with a good idea. Believe me it is not a good idea. Get over to your local repairman as soon as possible.

What is the saying... those who don't learn their history are destined to re-live it or something to that effect.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe this cue is not dead yet ;-)
