Have you played with a hybrid shaft yet??

@skor
here is another perspective
yes carbon fiber has its pros you listed many of them
it also has its cons
primary or a common criticism
lack of feel
wood has its pros
primary or a common positive is feel
so a hybrid gives a nice blend of the durability and consistency (and power transfer)
of carbon from the most important front part of the shaft
and the feel from the wood in the back
also regarding do we need more power
my thoughts are
if you can swing softer which is usually more accurate to generate more distance or draw when needed compared to wood alone
isnt that better?
to me
my answer would be yes

I think that is what Meucci attempted to accomplish, when creating their Carbon Pro shaft. A much more Wood like feel to the hit. I have yet to try one out, by the way. Their CF shaft is Cored with Maple, by the looks of it.

I would tend to agree.
Having seen cracked and gouged cf shaft though, I don't quite know the durability is something I count on. If they do get a gouge or deep scratch, you're kind of out of luck. I've seen cracked ones and gouged ones, really was nothing you could do about it.

Yeah, that is a huge Con with CF shafts. They do get dinged up, and damaged, for various reasons. I will just call it Abuse, so best to buy new, and take very good care of the shaft, and be very careful with it.

One of my problems with them. I like to leave the table for what ever reason an not have to worry about someone knocking my cue over or something. I don't need anything extra to worry about when I'm playing a match.

This post is about hybrid shafts that have a CF top and a wood bottom. Little is known about these but players' seem to react to them in a similar fashion to that of shafts made of a combination of CF and wood.

The hybrid and the combination CF/wood shafts appear silly, wacky, and gimmicky. Still, players and companies like them. Companies like the shafts because the combination makes the shaft stronger, more consistent quality, and cheaper wood can be used. It appears most McDermott shafts are combination shafts (G-Core and I-series) or carbon fiber.

The weirdest combination shaft and that looks like an upside-down hybrid shaft is Cuelees EX Solid that has two types of wood near the tip with "internal reinforcement of . . . various wood species", and at the joint end a sandwich of carbon fiber rods sitting inside and outside the hollowed-out maple wood.View attachment 886968

The wood dowel inside the hollow wood is replaced with a carbon fiber rod a few inches from the cue tip and continues to joint end. Nearer the joint, the wood core is encased with another carbon fiber rod to make the wood and CF sandwich.

Some swear by it. For example, an AZer wrote about EX Solid:

Wow, that is really far out, lol. I love all of this new tech so much. Back in the 90's, the coolest new tech to come out was the Predator 314 shaft.

No. The stiffness of the shaft seemed to produce a dead feeling. I felt like I had to stroke harder believe it or not. Went to the AVID shaft...problem solved. Could have been a combination of several factors.
🤷
I'm sure my experience differs from others. I can only share my own views as it relates to CF.

Hi, curious, what was the brand of CF shaft that felt dead to you? I hated the 1st few CF shafts I tried, that were from a few different custom cue makers, but when I tried the Whyte Carbon, I was floored (amazed) by the power, feel, and feedback that the shaft gave me.

I tried a couple of Raven shafts. One wasn't bad, the other I didn't care for, and I had one custom made, and I didn't care for the blank. I hit with a Cynergy, which was ok, but in the end I kept coming back to the AVID.

It's funny, everyone talks about the extra power you get with cf. I've had a number of them including revos to demo and I never got the impression that that was the case. I did try one revo someone let me use for a night at the hall. Was the 12.4 with a harder tip on it and that did get the ball around the table more than I'm accustom too. Possibly the tip makes a difference.
