Head String Line

There are several games (14.1, One Pockt, etc.) where the cue ball is placed behind the Head String after a scratch. The base of the ball (WPA Standardized Rules) where it touches the cloth determines proper placement. A Head String line drawn on the table with a Sharpe helps determine this placement.

Object balls on the Head String Line are legal to shoot.

6.10 Bad Cue Ball Placement
When the cue ball is in hand and restricted to the area behind the head string, it is a foul to play the cue ball from on or below the head string. If the shooter is uncertain whether the cue ball has been placed behind the head string, he may ask the referee for a determination.

My question is: Do you think this line should be drawn on tables?

Not sure most table owners would go for it. But I don't think it would be a bad idea. Just like reading the rule helps. I don't know how many people have argued w me over this rule..... probably just as many as the ones that tell me that solid-stripe-solid-stripe is the correct way to rack 8 ball.

No on the line. I was always taught as long as the base is behind the
head string it was legal. Now seeing the rule I know better.

I have the line drawn on my table. It does not bother me when I am shooting and I prefer to have it on the table.

I like the line drawn on the table, it just makes life easier.

I also like a line for the back of the triangle.
I pull to the line and I am on the spot and square with the table.

I like the idea of drawing the headstring line. I've had people accuse me of breaking the balls beyond the head string and if a line had been drawn on the tables then this wouldn't have been a problem.

For rooms that have a strong 14.1 following, the following lines should be drawn on the cloth of the table:

1. headstring line
2. rack area
3. center line (from foot-spot to foot-rail)

There are many common instances where the smallest of margins can change the outcome of a game that it is absolutely imperative that these lines are clear.
