What are the major differences between heartwood and sapwood? Do they hit pretty much the same? Is heartwood stiffer or more stable because it is the older part of the tree? Thanks for any replies.

The heartwoods in maple I have are more dense.
How does the added density change the hit?
Hit it is subjective but the heartwoods do hit harder.
The only problem with heartwoods is that they often have hue and some spots on them ( b'eye maples anyway). I wished people were more forgiving in wood in terms of cosmetics. That's why some bleach woods now to hide some cosmetic "flaws".
