BILLIARDS Hall of Famer Efren "Bata" Reyes took the last five racks in an impressive victory and reigning World Pool champion Alex Pagulayan routed his Taiwanese rival Sunday to lead the opening-day winners in the On Cue 3: Continental Conquest tournament at the Trade Hall of Robinsons Galleria.
Reyes, the 1999 World Pool champion, whipped Marcus Chamat of Sweden, 9-4, while Pagulayan easily prevailed over World Pool runner-up Chang Pei-wei of Chinese-Taipei, 9-1.
Two-time World Pool champion Chao Fong-pang of Chinese-Taipei downed Ralf Souquet of Germany, 9-6, and Yang Chin-shun beat Kunihiko Takahashi of Japan, 9-4.
Reyes started slow but hit his stride when world No. 7 Chamat fell prey to a series of lapses.
Chamat drew cheers with his golden ace on his break in the second rack. He later scored on Reyes' break to enjoy a 2-1 lead.
Reyes wrested the upper hand at 4-3, but Chamat tied it at 4-all.
Pagulayan dominated Chang, taking an 8-0 lead to the dismay of fans who were expecting a fight from his rival in their grudge rematch.
ABS-CBN, through chief operating officer Gabby Lopez and VP for Sports Peter Musngi, has put up a $50,000 cash purse for the event. The champion gets the top prize of $20,000 with $10,000 going to the runner-up
