We are planning a Tournament Early in 2009, that will be a ?Memorial tournament? to one of the Old Boy who LOVED Pool, and are trying to figure an angle to attract as many player as possible.

What is it that bring you to Tournament?

Good Raffle, with FUNDS from RAFFLE going into the Prize Fund?

Any other idea appreciated.

Topless rack girls? (BTW The UPA got really close to this in the televised rounds of a tournament a few years ago at the Bicycle Casino, watch it on ESPN Classic if you don't believe me!)

Aside from that here's the top 5 I can think of:

1) Guaranteed added funds.
2) Added prize funds that are guaranteed.
3) Money added to the prize purse separately from the entry fees no matter how many players enter.
4) You get the idea by now.
5) Really, why are you even still reading this?

Beyond that everything else is secondary, but if you want some ideas how about:

6) Asking a local pro to do an exhibition/play challenge games
7) Have discounted food/drinks for players (Assumes at location with bar)
8) Allow buy-backs for eliminated players
9) Offer spot prizes (Most balls on break, money ball on break etc.)
10) Have "fun" prizes for non-playing categories like best-dressed player, best looking pool cue etc.
11) Offer discounts on entry fees for early payment

short on ideas tonight

I'm not ignoring your request for help, I'm just short on ideas tonight. I guess my first question is who do you want to attract? Are you trying to make this a nice event for the people that knew the man or is your goal to attract as many players as possible?

I like the ideas already mentioned and making it a fun event if it is for the regulars. If you want to attract outsiders then there is only one answer: $$$

Start knocking on doors. Type up a short description of what you are doing and why this guy was special, one page with large lettering that can be read in two minutes, and start chasing sponsors. Guarantee them a place on a handbill and if you can make a deal to sell t-shirts so much the better. Don't turn your nose up at any amount large or small, it will all add up and you have time to knock on a lot of doors between now and maybe mid-December.

Even if you want the event just for the regulars I would still solicit small local sponsors. A lot of small items to be given away are nice if the sponsorships aren't in cash. Also talk to the radio stations that usually broadcast from somewhere most weekends. A little cross promotion could be possible especially if you give a few bucks to a charity or good cause as part of the event.

Try you hand at promoting. It is fun, frustrating, and educational.
