I put this thread in the ask the cue maker selection but would also like to here your comments on this as well because I know alot of you have piloted ivory joint cues. I am getting a cue made and am thinking of getting this done to it. I do not like the way stainless steel joint cues hit but that is my preference. I might now because I played with the same cue for fifteen years. Little help please.

My humble opinion would be find someone with an ivory jointed cue and ask to try hitting it some. I would also try something with a phenolic joint. You say you have a stainless jointed cue and all three play very different. Hit in a cue is very personal and the joint certainly affects this. Ordering a custom cue with an ivory joint and finding out you don't like it is an expensive learning process

i guess the gist of your question is whether a piloted ivory joint would make it hit somewhat like a ss joint, and the reason why you are concerened is because you never liked the hit of an ss joint?

i can somewhat relate to you (though take note im a lousy player so this is my .03 cents worth). long story short, from my personal experience, i do not think it is difficult to switch from a 3/8-10 flat faced ivory joint to a 5/16-14 piloted ivory joint or similar switches.

my personal preference is ivory 5/16-14. though the ivory 5/16-14 will have identical 'sharpness' and 'crisp' to a ss 5/16-14 joint, i do not think it has the loudness of an ss joint. i.e. i like ivory 5/16-14 pilot but not most of the ss 5/16-14. the only ss jointed cues i seem able to play with are b.szam, runde, mcdaniel, scruggs, vollmer.

if you want to compare ivory piloted 5/16-14 with big pin flat face ivory joints, i would think that the big pins ivory joint have a more 'rounded' hit. i cant think of a better word at the moment, and this is just my personal experience.

hope this helps.
