Help me find a mentor

I can't comment on Grady's teaching ability since I have never had a lesson from him. But I will say I would consider it and would probably shell out the money to find out. But I will mention a factor people have not brought up. And that is what you hope to see in America. I don't know if you have traveled here before. As a travel experience, I think Columbia would be pretty interesting for a foreign visitor. I have not spent much time in the South, but spent a week in Columbia on business/training. It will give you a n interesting look at a part of American history and culture. So read some history on the American Civil War (I plead guilty to not knowing enough about this BTW) and spend a little time looking around. I would also try to get to a bigger city. I suppose if you went to Grady you'd fly from London to Wash.D.C. and connect from there. I'd spend some time in Washington and then head south. You can make pool the focus of your trip, but while you're here do some things away from pool.

I have been thinking about that. I actually got back in to pool due to a trip to the States. Did washington, New York, Phiily and Pittsburgh and loved them all (apart from mayvbe washington, but i was in a nasty area).

I am interested in Columbia, but hey Buddy's in Florida and I've never been there either.

Location will certainly play a part, but the right teacher is the most important thing. I can always come back and look around another time :D

Theirlaw,

If I were you, and time and money was not a big concern, I'd check out a couple of instructors, not simultaneously, but separately. I would choose the first instructor to give me the fundamentals and another to provide more advanced instruction. I have heard that CJ Whiley in Texas is an excellent teacher of mental part of the game. I don't know what has happened to CJ, I haven't heard anything about him in a long time but he was a very good player 7 or 8 years ago.

Well it's been decided and Grady's my man. Not just because of his experience. But from speaking with Grady and Randi, they seem to be really lovely, genuine people. Now I have also emailed Buddy Hall (spoke to his wife) and Fast Larry (amung others). None of them gave me the same welcoming feel. Maybe like pool being a feel game, so's findign an instructor.

I'lll be overt there in April and will let you know how it goes.

Very excited though. Grady even mentioned the poss. of taking me to a tourney if there's one on :D

That's probably a good decision. I have heard he is a good teacher. And he probably knows as much about pool as any living human.

I believe he taught Allison Fisher how to play 9-ball, so there ya go :)

Boiled Peanuts. lol, don't think I will thanks.....

Now that is good enough for me :D

Thanks everyone for all your help..
