Help - need DCC straight pool event info

An acquaintance of mine (professional player) heard just today that at DCC there would be a double elimination straight pool event (head to head competition); with the "high run" event as a qualifier to see who would be in the real competition. I have no idea about the source of this info.

That is NOT the understanding that I got from the postings a few months ago. I understood that there would be a high run event; with the best qualifiers chosen to compete in a final event (that would also just be a solo "high run" type of thing). What's the scoop???? Is there really going to be a straight pool competition - or just the solo "high run" type of thing that Bob Jewett was discussing. I appreciate any info you can provide.

2006 Derby City Straight Pool Challenge

Schedule:
Prelims in the Chapel, January 6-11
Finals at the Executive East, January 12th and 13th

The game is straight pool (14.1) shoot-out -- you against the table with no opponent. There will be six days of prelims on five tables in the Chapel. $50 entry for three tries. Each try begins with a 14-ball rack and the 15th ball and the cue ball in hand, but both the 15th ball and the cue ball must be at least one ball diameter from any other ball. Each try ends on a miss or foul. A run of 40 in the prelims gets you one try in the finals, 80 - two tries, 120 - three tries, and so on. Only your highest run in the prelims counts, so three runs of 42 only gets you one try in the finals. You may enter the prelims more than once, but on the second and third entries, you get only two tries, and on any subsequent entries, you only get one try.

The finals will be over two days on two tables. You shoot as many tries (1,2,3, ...) as you earned with your best run in the prelims. Order of play will be by high run starting with the lowest. If there are a lot of entries, we may have to limit the finals to the top 50 players according to run lengths.

Prizes ($10k added, entries 100% returned):

Prelims: 1st $1500, 2nd $1000, 3rd $500
Finals: 1st $2000, 2nd $1500, 3rd $1000, 4th $500.
Bonus: $2000 for high run overall.
Special bonus: $1000 for the first run over 200.

The above payouts are with no entries and will be higher according to the final number of entries. With 200 entries, the amounts above are roughly doubled, and we will pay deeper in the finals.

Each player can receive only one payout in each of the two phases (prelims and finals), even if he has multiple high runs in one phase. If the highest run occurs in the prelims, that player will get (more than) $3500.

It looks like the most any one player could get is, $6500, not that there is anything wrong with that. :)
