Help w/ Stacked Leather Wrap

I have a nice custom cue that came with a stacked leather wrap, and its the first one I ever had so I am not sure if this is normal or just a shitty job on it.

Where the handle ends and the forearm and buttsleeve begin there is a ledge, like the wrap isn't thick enough to meet the rest of the cue? Does that make sense?

Anyway, I was told is was because it was a stacked leather wrap and that is how they are supposed to be.

So, being ME, I question, is that true? Or just a shitty job and they are trying to take advantage of someone that doesn't know better.

No, or maybe. Nothing is ever perfect. Every cue maker has their own parameters about what they consider as passable in the construction of their cues. Many would say it is not supposed to have a ledge as you are observing. Others may say it is OK. It can be hard sometimes to determine how deeply to cut the pocket for a wrap that you are not used to installing. I try to never veer from the depth of cut that I make for a linen wrap as that is what is most common and if it a change is made it is often what people opt for. Many leather and cork wraps are thicker than the linen. This is why most cue makers pay a premium price for leather wraps that are the correct thickness to fit correctly in a pocket cut for linen. The way I understand it, a stack wrap is slightly thicker when installed and then sanded down for a good fit. In your case it sounds as one of two things occured: 1. The wrap pocket was cut to deeply or 2. The stack wrap was sanded a little to much.

It is difficult to get an exact match and each wrap is a little different. I get some that come perfect, some a touch over, some a touch under. The problem lies with the fact that you cannot touch the finish on the cue. You get as close as you can.

Also, that wrap itself may have been resanded and cleaned in order to sell it, causing the wrap the to be a little under. I have refinished some up to four times. Each time, you remove a little material to expose new fibers and then reseal it as it would have been before.
