so i have a friend who is a new cuemaker. he already made me a gorgeous cocobolo and african blackwood wrapless cue that hits beautiful. it made me put up my beloved carolina. so i want him to work on a new cue for me. this time a traditonal 4 pointer ebony into maple with a ebony butt sleeve. my dilema (and the reason for my cry for help here) is i dont know what to do with the handle. i want to go wrapless again but want to try to preserve the "traditional" element somewhat. i dont want to go with ebony as i dont want the handle to blend in the the points and butt sleeve. and i dont want to go with maple b/c i am looking for a little contrast. any thoughts about an appropriate wood here? any pics? all help welcome

Wrapless

Would you concider a stacked leather wrap. They can be sanded smooth enough to feel like a wrapless but still give the correct contrast.

good choices. i guess i didnt consider cocobolo b/c it played so prominently in my last cue. snakewood...first blush is its pretty similiar to maple, but the more i think about it...

You say hes new to cue making so I am not sure what he can do but you could still go with a maple handle but put some ebony boxes in it.Your handle would still have the contrast and at the same time match the fore-arm and points.
 
Maple ????

Could use a nice tight piece of curley maple .....with some ebony ring work ...you also may want to choose a veneer color for the pionts and use some of that color wood in the handle ......Just my 2 cents...Anyway good luck

i am intrigued by the look of a stacked leather wrap and wouldnt rule it out on a cue, but i'm not sure my friend has the equipment (although if he is reading this thread, i am NOT suggesting you buy a new toy :) )

good suggestion. you guys are making my job much more difficult. i love it! thanks for all the responses and keep 'em coming. i'm sure my friend will be following this thread as well. it will give us something to talk over at the poolroom tonight

Idea #2

You could start with the ebony pionts and at the end by the -A-joint you could recut another wood in like Tulip and use that as the handel segmented with the ring work that you use at the -A- joint only maybe a bit thinner then back to ebony at the end classy .....I'm working on a tulip cue now that is really nice send me a pm if you need more info........Just my 2:grin:
 
you guys are great. i really appreciate all the ideas. so i was talking the design over with my friend while we were shooting at the poolhall tonight and i am leaning toward a segmented handle maybe maple, ebony, maple but still nothing carved in stone. would love to hear any other ideas. also kinda cool tonight was that stefano pelinga and ralf eckert were there (pool table magic) just hanging out and talking trick shots with a couple of folks. they are still in the area (CT) after the world cup of trick shots at mohegan sun. i know that some rooms always have pros around but it is pretty unusual around this neck of the woods.
