Help with info about the cue maker Leon Sly?

I was mainly just curious about opinions on Sly cues, and if the hit is similar to any other cue makers cues, or unique?

I have seen many pictures of his cues, and was just really impressed.

He sure does make some really beautiful cues.

Why not call and talk to him. I'm sure he can answer all your questions better than anyone else.

I do not own a Sly, but hit a few racks with one. Play very nice. His fit and finish are excellent and keeps his designs very traditional. I don't think you could go wrong with his work. Just my 2¢... Matt D.

I've owned a lot of different cues from different makers and I would rank the Sly sneaky I had in the top 5 for my preference of hit and shaft taper. One of the few I regret flipping.

Unlike some makers he's responsive to calls and emails too.

One of the best craftsmen and great traditional designs with a bit of tasteful uniqueness as well.

no luck

I called Sly about two years ago, had a great talk about cues and ended up ordering a cue. From this point on never heard a thing, tried calling a few times still no response. In most cases when a cuemaker doesn't keep up on his paperwork you will have issues.

Sly must have sold my cue. No respect!

Only heed the comments of Azers they either currently own or have extensively played with Sly pool cues..........Based solely upon looks alone, the guy is a damn "Cue Maestro".
However, for all I know Sly cues could be only so-so or might be the best in the world....... relying only upon the appearance of his cues posted in the Cue Gallery, Sly cues rock!

I've played with one of his sneaky pete's (5/16x14 piloted) and it hit like a solid metal rod. Maybe I'm just used to playing with a G10 3/8x10 pin, but the hit was unusually hard. That being said, it was a very nice cue and the Fit & Finish was superb. I had no troubles playing with it, it just didn't suit my preferences.

Sly Cues

I've owned and shot with Sly cues. His craftsmanship is top notch. In terms of the feedback of the hit, out of all the cues I've owned and shot with (excluding laminated and low deflection shafts), I would rate Sly cues as 2nd, only behind Sugartree cues #1.

Last time I chatted with Leon, he had a 1 year waiting list. It may be longer now...

Leon is also one of the nicest cue maker I've known personally.

How so? The OP wanted people's opinions on using his cues versus others. Not the manufacturer making a sales pitch.

I am sorry, that is my fault, because I edited my original post after that 1st reply. I was asking questions like how many cues does Sly make per year, and many other questions too, but I decided that all of those questions were really not that important. From what I have seen, it looks like Sly only builds cues to customer specs, and makes one of a kind cues, but I do not know. So that is why I received that 1st reply before I edited my original post.

I had a purpleheart sneaky of his and loved it. I sold it, and then bought it back. I really liked his shaft taper and the balance of the cue.

I'm currently waiting on a sneaky I bought a Sly based on owner reviews. Will follow up when I get it.

A buddy of mine plays on a Sly cue and is very happy with it. I hit a few balls with it and I was impressed. The points were very sharp and even the ring-work looked great. In MY opinion, his cue has a similar hit to an Andy Gilbert that I own (both cues have a flat face joint with a 3/8 pin). Hope this helps.

sly is the guy!

I own and play with a sly hoppe with a juma joint and a 3/8x10 pin, very consistent hit and good feedback. I have tried many customs and this is my player and always will be. I have owned it for 5 years and it is straight and solid as the day it was made.

I got my cue last week. Have not played with it yet. It is a beautiful cue. My biggest con would be the turnaround. I was told 4-5 weeks for a sneaky. I ordered it in June...just got it last week(3rd week Oct). It was paid for in full. I had no doubt I would get it but would rather have been told it will take a few months. If you order a Sly simply be prepared to wait for it. And his cues are worth waiting for....but not at my age. I'll never order a custom again from anyone. I'd buy another SLY but only if it were complete and ready to ship.
