Help with Rule question...

Playing 9 ball sets tonight, had something happen that hasn't ever happened to me in 18 years of playing. Opponent kicked at a ball after I played safe, he made a good hit and the cue ball came to rest deep in the side pocket. Think it must of been held on by lint. I'm ready to shoot, actually in the last movement of my struck and the cue ball falls into the side.

I had not struck any balls, it simply fell on its own. What we did since neither of us knew the rule was to re-rack. Ended up losing that set, and three more after it. Was a real momentum buster for me to say the least.

So what is the rule?

I think it falls under a 5 second rule. If the ball falls after five seconds its spotted back in front of the pocket. I think

this is right but i believe once your opponent leaves the table and gives up his turn instead of 5 seconds. but i have heard both takes on time, either way the cue ball should have been spoted and works the same if it was the object ball instead of the cue ball.

Cueball is replaced and you shoot again. If the 5 seconds had passed after the balls stopped moving after your opponents previous shot. Actually, all balls which move spontaneously are to remain in position except balls dropping down in the pocket. Then they are replaced as close as original position as possible.

Hi Mikko,

Many years ago here in the States, we had a comedian known as the "unknown Comic". His stage dress, less the collar, was remarkably similar to your avitar. Could there be a chance? :D

Don't know. At least when the pic was taken, I was quite a comic. But that's always the case after a few pitchers of beer :p

Or maybe I'm just trying to remain unknown :)

I ran tournys for a long time, saw the incident happen once. If you are playing texas express rules the 5 sec rule does apply. {STICK}

Playing 18 years and you never heard of this? That is what is amazing.

Go buy a BCA rule book.

Or, if you can't afford it download the rules from Texas Express.

18 years? Amazing. Truly amazing.

You don't vote do you? Please tell me you don't.

Yes Jake I vote. Voting is a lot more important than pool any day. No I don't get all my views from M. Moore either before you ask.

I just had never had this come up so had no reason to know the rule. I try to be familiar with the rules, but we tend to agree on the general rules before start of play. Usually playing a slightly modified version of texas express. This was a specific problem that just hasn't come up.

Thanks to the answers everyone. And I'll get around to buying a rule book, no place locally to buy them so I never had one. Print out the rules as things come up for nine ball. Eight ball I play tournaments in, so much more familiar with those rules. Nine ball I just play with people I know and like so we don't get into rule arguments very often.
