OK so i dont know much about lathes or diffrent kinds or what all you need but i want to learn and i want to eventually make cues.

right now im looking for a good lathe to do shafts on and that could possibly work for butts in the future. i do have experience with tips and conditioning and ferruls on a lathe just FYI.

any idea what all i would need to get started and maybe a hardball qoute???

First things first.

I would recommend that before you even consider buying any type of equipment, you may want to get as much information as possible about what is involved in cue repair and cue building. I would start by running a search of this forum. There are also a lot of very good books, dvd's etc available. I am sure that others will post some of their recommendations on where to obtain training materials. Good luck! Let me know if I can be of any additional assistance.

Of course I am very biased as I build lathes, but if you may want to build cues in the future I suggest getting a Deluxe Cue Smith with taper attachments. It is light weight enough to move around easily and heavy enough to do the job. The resale percentage is pretty good also if you later decide you don't want to keep pursuing it. There is a used one right now on the Cue Machinery forum.

dont waste your time with crap and headaches, if you want to do everything and build cues, go with a hightower deluxe, pick a like new one up for 2000 bucks, DOES EVERYTHING Right out of the box

you will own it forever

keep in mind, you dont get a lathe and build a cue in a week, it takes months to properly season and cut down wood so it doesn't warp out

precision and perfection take time and patience
