Well, I had a long day at the office, but couldn't resist the temptation to check out a few hours of the World Summit. Lots of top men were there, and I also caught up with WPBA pros Laurance, Thornfeldt, Webb, Paglia, and Barretta, who were there sweating some of the action. Nostroke was there, too.
Break fromat: Sardo rack, alternate break, no break box, and rack your own, with the one ball racked on the spot.
I never even saw the tournament chart, and have no idea how many are left, but I'll relate things I remember from the matches I saw:
Dave Hemmah vs Johnny Archer
This was a seesaw affair all the way up to 7 - 7, but Hemmah played beatifully and pulled away late to win it 11-8. I'd heard a lot about Dave, but this was the first time I got to see him play. Fine player!
Danny Barouty vs Gabe Owen
In the 2003 Big Apple nine Ball cahllenge, Danny Barouty played and beat Thortsten Hohmann, who had been crowned world champion just a couple of weeks earlier. Tonight, he had to play Gabe Owen, crowned US Open champion just two weeks ago, and once again, the credentials of his opponent didn't faze him. Barouty played well to jump out to a 6 - 3 lead, but a defensive error opened the door for Owen, and it was 6 - 6 very quickly. Barouty pulled a way again, and Owen started to close the gap again, but with Barouty on the hilll, Gabe scratched on the five ball, and that was the end of it, with Barouty eliminating Gabe.
Santos Sambajon vs Jose Garcia
Generally well-played but Santos caugfht a key roll at the right moment. Leading by 9 - 8, he miscued on the one ball, but it banked the length of the table into the opposite corner pocket. This led to a 10 - 8 lead and an 11 - 9 win.
Corey Deuel vs John Schmidt
Deuel came out fast and led 5 - 2, and later 9 - 4, but Schmidt dug down deep to get within 9 - 8. They traded racks for 10 - 9, but Corey, seemingly about to run out to end the match, had a bad miss on a seven ball and hung it. The position Schmidt faced is shown below, and if John could get out, he'd be breaking at double hill. John hit a medium/slow masse to the bottom rail but caught the seven thinner than he would have liked, and the cue ball ran into the nine ball, leaving John hooked from the eight. The result was a kick and sellout, leading to an 11 - 9 Deuel win. Great match!
