Hendry and Davis given pass

Adrian Goldstein - Talksports radio

Tonight Adrian interviewed Stephen Hendry & asked him about returning to Snooker & taking up Barry Hearns offer & would he be coming back to Snooker.

Stephen said the proposals were discussed a few weeks ago but he had no plans and had no schedule (must be the marital situation !) but he would enter the minor events if offered the chance and would take it from there but if he thought he was getting embarrassed by players he thought he should be beating he wouldn't accept the offers.

Stephen Hendry did say that he'd love to play at next years World Championships at the Crucible.

Well if he can change his partner for a new one he can surely find a new cue to play with !

Adrian Goldstein - Talksports radio - Barry Hearn Interview

Adrian asked Barry to explain how the pass would work.

Barry said for talking sake it's a 128 player tournament & say there were 4 withdrawals so Hendry , Davis etc would get first offers of a place in the tournament so in a way it's a good thing as it might save matches from being walkovers when the opponent doesn't turn up.

If it was up to me I'd have given the passes to the local players but I'm not Barry Hearn !

On balance, I'm against this. There are too many old lags occupying value real estate as it is, and this will only further stifle the development of new talent IMO.

Hendry should look at how Ken Docherty is fairing today before committing himself to this. Davis and White should have been put out to pasture a decade or so ago.

Davis and White should have been put out to pasture a decade or so ago.

What are you on about? Davis was ranked in the top 16 until 2008 ( with a few seasons where he dipped outside the 16) and was ranked 22 in the world as late as 2011. He was runner up in the 2nd biggest tournament in snooker in 2005, which is about a decade or so ago. By his own heyday standards he certainly was put out to pasture but this happened in the early 1990s. But those standards were, and still are, incredibly high.

I say bring it on. Cliff Thorburn against an up and comer under the lights (and it will make the qualifiers worth televising) over 19 frames will be a test for both players involved. And it will be a lot of fun. Hendry and Davis have earned their chance to not have to live out of a suitcase for most of the year.

And they would still beat the crap out of most snooker players (and pool players in a game they hardly play) outside the elite any day of the week under any conditions.
