Here's a Warped Schon

I bought a Schon off E-Bay. It was one of those deals where a good E-Bay seller who didn't know anything about cues was selling a cue for a friend. After a lot of back and forth, bad pictures, etc., I figure it's a nice older Runde era Schon with spliced points. It comes in and it is as described, except the shafts were supposed to be "straight".

One was slightly out, and one was badly warped (this is why you get two shafts!). Naturally, since this cue was supposed to be straight, I was a little upset. To my surprise I could actually photograph the warp. I sent this photo back to the seller asking for some cash back. Here it is:

Or, get a Schon replacement shaft that says "Schon" at the base. I still think an old Schon with a warped shaft still beats a Southwest with terribly aligned points. ;)

Hemmmm, no I don't want to get into that!!! :D

Well, believe it or not, I tried to buy the Southwest too. I figured I could pick it up at a discount. I was thinking maybe $1600. I sent an e-mail to Laurie Franklin. She sent me an e-mail to contact IndyQ. I decided not to mess with it any further because I knew they wouldn't discount it - so I dropped it.

But yes, I tried to by the Southwest with the uneven points.

I've tried playing with several Southwest cues and although well made, they just don't float my boat like other brands of custom cues do.

SouthWest cues are not for everyone. They hit really stiff and you have to have a good stroke to move the cue ball around.

Why would you choose a cue with a defect that makes it not play well, over a cosmetic "defect" that does not effect the play whatsoever? That is like saying I am going to have nice golf clubs with crooked heads that make me miss every putt, but if someone looks real close at my clubs they will be impressed with how nice they look.

I guess I missed that one. Unless it was the one where almost everyone was telling a guy to send his cue back because a point was almost 1/4" shorter than the others. The fixes on evening the points up usually cause more problems than having a shorter point. You guys would go nuts slamming the carom cue I built yesterday for myself. It was out of an old bar butt and the points are over an inch off. :) But My pool room got a carom table and I wanted to throw something together fast. Then turns out I built my first carom cue the day Sang Lee dies. Sorry to hear of his passing.

The key words in your post are, "I built yesterday for MYSELF". My personal golf clubs that I use aren't always finished off to beautiful perfection either and I sometimes allow my grips to get too worn out and beaten down through use and get to lazy about changing them. But, I would NEVER allow something other than perfect to pass through my hands to someone else. My personal motto is "ZERO DEFECTS". Would you allow something less than perfect which was made by you go out to a customer at full price, or even any price? I take too much pride in my product to allow that to happen.

My feelings are, the bigger the name and reputation, the higher their standards should be in regards to allowing something sub-standard out the door.

I may be close, but I haven't lost my marbles entirely yet. A warped Schon over a couple of uneven points? LOL I would have done the same thing Tate tried to do, but even for less, but I wouldn't have paid full fare for the cue like the other guy gave the impression that he was doing. That just wasn't right.

Well, I'm glad you and Nat came to terms. If you're ever out this way let's get together.
