What would you do if a "friend" who was a table mechanic told you repeatedly over 3 months that he would warranty his work in the event he used inferior glue on the rubber and the table started playing like crap.

The table plays really bad now, and after repeated attempts to get this "friend" to honor his word, I decided to bite the bullet, disassemble the rail top myself, and have another mechanic re-do them for me.

Should I have the rubber replaced as well even though it was only put on approximately 7 months ago (Brunswick super speed), or can it be sanded well enough to be re-glued with a decent glue, and if so what glue would you recommend??

We normally just toss the rubber. Can it be reused by being sanded down? I'm not sure because I normally don't mess with the rerubbers. Another person at our shop does.

However the manual labor of sanding the actual rubbers down could turn out to cost more than just replacing them.

You can ask him if he can sand them down. It does seem plausable. But on the other hand if you replace it with new rubber you will know you'll be good to go for another 20years providing it's done right.

Mechanic Wanted

Anybody know a good table mechanic in the Washington, D.C. metro area?
I am in Leesburg, VA. 20175
Thanks, Purdman:cool:

I'm assuming the cushions have come loose and thats why the table plays bad? Did he use a hard brittle glue or a softer more flexible type? It is possible to re-use them but it could be very time consuming removing the old glue.

when we pulled on one of the rubbers (after removing the rail cloth of course) it appeared to be of the flexible type. It also appeared that it was only glued in spots, not across the entire cushion.

what glue would you recommend?

I use DAP Weldwood contact cement in the gel form and have never had a bond problem with it. Buy some 80 grit sheets of sandpaper, lay them flat on a table and run the cushion back and forth until they are smooth enuff to lay flat on the rail. Sand/scrape the surface of the rail too . Wipe both surfaces with a damp rag to remove any loose material . Use a small putty knife or a small paintbrush and apply the gel to the rail about 1/16 " thick. Give it 5-10 minutes to set up before you lay the cushion on it, put the rail bots in the rails so they are propped up when doing this. You want a little too squeeze out to insure a good bond and wipe the extra off or smooth it out before it sets up.Give it 24 hrs and then do the same with the facings and trim any slop leftover with a razor blade.

great glue

the weld wood glue is great stuff,(bought the gel by mistake once and loved it)
may I suggest a new brand by weld wood.....it is a water based product ....no toxic smell...I carry a pint can in my tool box when doing table recovery for pocket facing falling off .....no smell cleans up very nicely.... and one more thing to do ...let the glue set up a little longer than 10 min...30 min is better....and i use a small drimel with a sanding bit to finish the facings perfect ...thanks for listening... Terry
