History of Bank Pool?

I live in Kentucky and as long as I've played pool, Bank Pool has been one of the main games that everybody plays. You can go to any pool room in the state and somebody is in there banking balls. So, I guess my question that I'm getting at is "where did it start?" I've heard lots of stories about it coming from Chicago or wherever. But, does anybody actually know where it all began? I was just looking for a history lesson, I thought about asking Truman, but knowing him he'd just tell me he invented it.
 
Many old time poolrooms used to charge by the rack -- not table time. Even when I started playing in the 60's it was till going on. That makes Banks appealing because it slows the game down, and may have contributed to its origins. The recognition and documentation of bank shots goes back to the earliest books on pocket billiards...
