This is interesting.

From Hoyle's Games, 1879...

Billiards rule 24: "Any person playing at a ball while running, canot count."

[They used the "mace" and cue back then, so maybe they were playing with the mace and like a hockey game?]

I think the "running" refers to the ball, not the person. 'course I've seen some running in pool rooms before. In fact, brave men run in my family.
