Hi there!

Really didn`t find a better place for this post so i hope i`m not all wrong with it.

I`m interessted in your opinion about the hit of Mottey/Scruggs cues.

Actually i am thinking about purchasing either one. Also got PDF Drexler`s cues in mind.

The work sould be almost perfekt at both, Mottey sould be a little bit more rare than Scruggs(!?), dont know about PDF.

But what about playability?

Would be glad to see your opinions on that topic!

Best regards,

Hiya. You can't go wrong with either one, in my opinion. I, personally, found that the Scruggs cues I've owned (8 or 9 now) were a bit more "lively".....or had a touch more "feel" to 'em. That's not to say that Mottey cues aren't great players....they most definitely are.

If I were to pick one, I'd go with a Scruggs. It's a nice touch, too, that Tim and Mike (Cochran) are such great guys, and go to the ends of the earth to help out a Scruggs or Cochran cue owner.

I've only hit with one PFD...and didn't like it much...but I can't justify that cue as a frame of reference.

I'll just stick to this - "Either one is great...but a Scruggs is a MONSTER player, regardless of the details (joint and pin, wrap, balance, weight, etc.)

Good luck,

Mark

Mottey and Scruggs cues are both awesome. I prefer the Scruggs hit, but HIT is subjective and personal. You won't go wrong with either.

i have had many of each over last 15 years or so,but i hane recently settled on scruggs, iplay the ivory big screw, but i just had a cochran with steel joint and big screw, both are close to the same if cost is a factor I.recommend the steel joint big screw.scruggs or cochran are the best you can play with.

My .02

I would say that Mottey is my preference; it is all subjective. I would get a Mottey or Scruggs before I would consider a PDF, there are many other cuemakers I would put before PDF (though he makes a very nice cue, not my cup of tea). I am a wood to wood fan..

3 winners

You are considering 3 excellent cue builders. I have owned cues from each and been pleased with their performance and quality. There are many criteria one might use to judge a cue though. As other posters have pointed out, playability is subjective.

There is considerable variation within the cues made by each maker.
I have hit with Scruggs cues that were stiff as rocks and others that felt just right. I was put off by the first couple Mottey's I tried until finding the cue in my avitar. Old super tight grained shafts probably helped. I have loved the hit of every Drexler I ever played. My point, however, is that these makers can build a cue to suite your preferences. Dimensions, materials and design are flexible in the hands of a master cuemaker and will produce different results depending on what you request. I say hit with several until you find something that strikes you, or get to know your own perferences then make them clear to the cuemaker you prefer.

Resale is very strong with Scruggs and perhaps even better with Mottey. Drexlers have been harder for me to sell, though I have never lost money on one. Mottey does great mitered boxes in his rectangle cues, Scruggs often prefers recuts. Neither is better...but I get weak in the knees over miters so I went with Mottey. Two years ago Drexler offered a rectangle cue that he made with CNC. I fancy myself an expert yet I was totally fooled. His precision is awesome and the cost was 1K less than my Mottey. Make your own call! Cost, construction, delivery time, resale...choose what matters to you and ask specific questions. I think you are on the right track with these 3 makers though. Good luck

Those are both great playing cues, but I would rather have a McDaniel than either one of those. They just hit better imo. Lots of people on here agree. Of course everyone is welcome to their own opinion. Good luck with finding the right cue :D

Hi guys!

I really wanna thank you for your replies so far!

Really helped me especially in beeing basically sure to choose one of the goodies! Unfortunaltelly i wont find any mottey to play with but i will find a scruggs. Just want to buy a real good player, nothing to fancy. If i can name one mine i`ll go and post some pictures in the gallery forum ;)

Cue Choice

McDaniel..............5/16 x 14 Piloted Ivory Joint

Simply the Best..................Nuff Said

Thanks

hi

You will have to try both Mottey and Scruggs cues othervise you will never be happy with just one :)

Thats how it is with pool cues :)

My personal feeling is that Mottey and Scruggs make comparable quality in terms of contruction. However, it is really to difficult to characterize "hit" differences. I've collected and played with over 100 cues and they all "hit" different, even with cues from the same maker.

If you have ever hit with a Scruggs or Mottey, don't necessarily expect the same hit from one that you purchase over the internet.

my 2 cents.

Doug
