Hitting the rack Square

I have always thought I was hitting the head ball dead on, on the break. But then I put one ball on the spot, and put the cue ball, one diamond off the rail in the center of the table. My intention was to hit that ball head on and watch it come off the rail and smack the cue ball head on, proving I was hitting it square. However it did not. Sometimes it did not hit at all, and the best I was getting was hitting about half of it. I was not hitting the cue ball hard, but still hard enough to be a break. Maybe you can have better results than I did. Sounds easy, try it. Post your results, and if you had to adjust, what you did for better results.

I haven't tried it yet but could you be transferring some spin to the 1 ball by not hitting the cue ball dead center?

Place a cube of chalk on the end rail to give yourself a definative point to aim (at). You might be surprised how the mass of balls in the rack distort your vision of where you are shooting.
