GO HAWKS!
Worth stopping by? Im headed to San Fran for a day tomorrow and thought i would check it out... is it worth going to etc?

Erik,

I could be wrong but I think Hollywood is closed. If you're going to SF, go to Family Billiards on Geary St. It is owned by a good pool player named Delbert Wong. Great place! If I am wrong about Hollywood, my apologies to them.

hmmm i saw online about it... i might give Hollywood a call to double check, no point going into that part of the city if i dont have to. And if they are indeed closed, i shall hit Family

They were closed for a while, but I think they have re-opened, and I don't know if the name has changed. They are listed at infospace.com.

for the record, they appear to be closed
at least they were at 2pm today... chain and padlock on the door
It may be that they just open later now. I'm told that they are down to ten tables, and that they have raves Friday and Saturday to pay the bills. The neighborhood is not where you would want to leave your car parked unguarded. No players go there any more. This is sad.

In the 1960's the place was Cochran's, and was owned by Welker Cochran's son. It was a lot like the Ames hall protrayed in the Hustler, with three-shade lights down over the tables, and darkness everywhere else. You went to Cochran's when you wanted to watch action or be in action. It was said that Ronnie Allen, during marathon sessions, would call over to the counter man, "Glass of beer and a straight-shooting pill!" and they would oblige on both counts. There were 20-dollar pink ball games on the 6-by-12 snooker tables. This is six ball (rotation) as a ring game with $20 on each ball and $40 on the pink. Run-outs paid double, and there were run-outs. In a 6-player game, a runout would pay $700. There were five-by-ten pool tables with clay balls.

After it was remodeled in the early 90's(?) it was a lot brighter -- I never knew there were windows out onto Market and Golden Gate. It went through several owners, and just before the last change, there was a fight, and someone got killed in the street. It was closed for a while, and then reopened (I think) in its current mode.
