Homemade lathe warning

I know I should have put this on the tail end of the other thread, but I did not want anyone to have the same problem as me:

Got my lathe built and first thing I did was melt a ferrule and my finger. Just wanted let everyone know that 1500 sandpaper will burn up a ferrule quick. Good thing it was a practice stick. After learning that, and how much heat a cordless drill can generate, shaping is now a breeze.

I started out with a home made lathe with a drill motor for cleaning shafts and shaping tips. I later bought a lathe from Chris Hightower and i've enjoyed owning it ever since I bought it. Things like melting ferrules can happen with any lathe if you don't have much experience, but you learn quickly. Chris has some good tapes on cue repair that might help you if you are wanting to expand your knowledge.
