Hood Leather Goods Announces Closing

As a longtime customer, I received an email this morning stating that Hood Leather Goods will be closing for good by June of this year. The owners are apparently ready to retire, and sadly, can't find anyone suitable to buy the business from them. Hood Leather Goods has always done a fantastic job, for reasonable prices, for pocket repairs, replacements, or making custom pockets, in a very timely fashion.

Since RC Designs ceased to exist a number of years ago, to my knowledge, Hood Leather Goods was the only remaining major US manufacturer for pool table leather pockets and pool table leather pocket repairs. This is certainly not good news for any of us.

For any of you guys out there whose leather pockets may be needing refurbishing or replacing soon, I would strongly suggest taking care of this in the next few months before Hood Leather Goods closes up shop for good. I'm hopeful that maybe once this word gets out, someone may step up and take over / buy out this business.

I can only assume, if they can't find someone to buy the business or take over the running it for them, that they've not been profitable in recent years. I know at one time not too long ago, after RC Designs went out of business, Hood made the pockets for most of the major US table manufacturers such as Brunswick, Olhausen, Connelly, Diamond, etc. I'm guessing it's likely all these companies are now purchasing most of their pockets from less expensive overseas sources - very sad.

Sad to hear, but doesn't surprise me. Back when I was still doing leather work, I did pocket repairs for a local pool hall. Why? The owner was too cheap to buy replacements, so I was fixing them for table time. He ended up screwing me on the deal, but that's a story for another time....

In this day and age, a good percentage of people choose the cheaper option, quality be damned.

City buses are blueprinted overseas in China, fabricated and built in Canada, then distributed throughout the States.

Quality be damned.... a lot of people do not understand custom quality work and look for cheap. Quality stuff does not come off the shelf in shoe box. Good steak is not cheap...cheap steak is not good.,

I have a Hood cover on my GC4. It's about 20 years old and still in great condition.
