Hooked on One Pocket

Smittie, the system used by the tournament you play in--I gather its a play to the your handicap on ball count, right? Joyner needs 15+4 balls against everyone. What kind of setup is used for race length and single or double elimination. Can you tell me about how long it seems to take to get to a winner in that tournament and field size?

Sorry for the questions but 1p.org's sample tournament handicap system is not alot of help.

It's not like that either.

In my first tournament I told them to rank me a 7 on the scale to 15 becuase they didn't know me at all. I told them I was an APA 5 in 9ball and an APA 4 in 8ball. But I also told them I can jump to an 7 or 8 if I'm having a good night and a 3 if I'm having a bad night. But I'm more concerned with playing good players so I told them to overrank me. So they put me at a 7.

In my first tournament I played a person who is an 8 in APA 9ball. But was ranked a 4 in the 1pocket tournament. He was an excellent shot but fairly easy to safety on him. However I didn't have the consistant shot making ability he had. The race was 9-6 with me having to make 9 balls (I'm was ranked a 7) and him having to make 6 balls (Him being ranked a 4). He also was told to take the first break while others flip a coin. You play 2 games.

My second tournament I told them to keep me a 7. But the person I played the week before spoke on my behalf and they made me a 6.

I don't know what the handicap of the person I played was. We had a race of 8-6 with me going to 6 and my opponent going to 8. I was given the first break. On other people they have a flip for the break.

If you ask around on 1pocket enough I think someone should have a good answer. Or put a seperate post on AZbilliards with the specific question "How to handicap a 1pocket tournament." And if you do have a 1pocket tournament I'd say for the first few have a free one with small amounts of bar cash and no handicapping system just to get it rolling. And to establish some rankings of players.

Best of luck to you
Mark

Oh yeah. Single elimination. The tournament is played on 8 tables. All shimmed and seperated from the rest of the pool hall to a degree. I think they generally have between 20-25 players. The tournament starts at 8:30pm and normally ends between 3am and 4am.

Nine ball is like checkers, one pocket is like chess.

I think you need more brainwork in checkers than in nine ball. And while one pocket is challenging for your brains, I find it the most rewarding as well if my shots are going as planned.

Maybe when I grow up

Glad you're improving. Hate to see you get nickel and dimed to death. As for me, I turn down all invitations to play 1p. For one thing, I can barely play when all 6 pockets are in use. For another, it seems the game requires a proficiency in banking and shot-making - two weak points for me. Maybe when I improve in those areas I'll give the game a try.

Or maybe my temperament makes it impossible for me to appreciate the game. I went to a 1p tourney a couple years ago and watched Varner and a local guy play a game. After a half hour of playing it appeared the only thing they had accomplished was to move all the balls to the other end of the table. Then I dozed off...:)
