i hope im not breaking some ettiquette rule
but in this thread(link below) old no 9 started on coccobolo hoppe style he showed a gorgeous cue
i asked what made it a "hoppe style" since to me that meant a narrow ivory ring in the butt
noone answered my question
i mean no disrespect to old no 9
but could someone tell me what features this cue has to make it "hoppe style"
and whats your picture of a hoppe style cue
pic of cue here

Short answer: no butt cap

I very well could be wrong in referring to this cue as Hoppe style, but would there be any question if the bottom ring where ivory? Also other more traditional Hoppe cues I have do not have a bumper. This one does but it is rather small just enough to protect the butt of the cue.

If I could edit to eliminate Hoppe style from the title I would to avoid confusion with a traditional Hoppe cue.

thanks for your reply
i still think its the ivory ring that makes it a "hoppe style" with or without a bumper
i did a search on hoppe
http://forums.azbilliards.com/search.php?searchid=9004552&pp=25
when push comes to shove
it really doesnt matter
how you described it
you have one helluva beautiful cue to be proud of:)
i hope it always gives you pleasure
thank you for sharing the pics

In my opinion, the distinguishing features of a "Hoppe" style cue are the square-ish butt end, lack of a bumper, exposed weight bolt and solid brass joint. Lots of other Rambow designed/built cues share some of these details, but the "Willie Hoppe" signature cues specifically had them all.

Universal to the Hoppe style is the veneered 4-point full-splice construction with a cut-in cord or leather wrap.

I have no idea why some current cues lack ALL of those specific features and are still billed as "Hoppe" style cues. But then I also have no idea why some cues on this forum are referred to as "Sneaky Petes" when - with joint collars, joint and butt rings, and butt caps - they are anything but "sneaky"...

Here is the longer explanation of why I referred to my cue as a "Hoppe" style, from someone more knowledgeable then me. The "Hoppe" ring actually had no bearing on the style it was just an added extra. Think I'll talk to Barry about swapping out the ivory joint for a brass one, removed the small bumper myself. :grin-square:

When I first started playing pool in 1966, at my local community center, there were still a few people that use to bring in what we called the Hoppe cues and they had the square-ish butts not all had the ivory rings.

But I will defer to deanoc, who is a whole lot more knowledgeable than me and I believe older as well, who says it is not 'Hoppe" style.

A Hoppe cue has an ivory ring and a short butt cap. Not a delrin long white cap adopted in the 60's, but the black half a butt cap. The weight bolt can be exposed, or with a bumper.

Other people may have other ideas, butt anyone can look at a Brinswick Willie Hoppe and know when a cue has the same design characteristics at the butt cap end.

These are all cues with Hoppe rings, (ring above butt cap, normally ivory) the last cue is an actual Hoppe cue, where the term is derived. There is a Gus, a Barry, a Rambow. All Hoppe style, the only cue not a "full on" Hoppe style is the BS cue. It has the ivory ring, but has wood between the ring and the butt cap.

The cue that started this thread I personally would not consider a Hoppe cue.

Thank you for chiming in with your expertise. as I mistakenly titled the thread "Cocobolo Hoppe Style" and cold not edit it out. I have taken the photos down so as to not confuse anyone with the title. I just didn't want that thread to go in any other direction than to share the beauty of a Barry Szamboti cue.

The mistake I made was when I first saw it, the shape of the butt on the cue reminded me of one I already owned made by Gus, which I think you would agree is a "hoppe Style".

My cocobolo cue does have a black Butt cap albeit a rather short one. Which I am sure is far to short to be considered "Hoppe style".

The only thing I would parse with you is the need for the white "Hoppe ring" to be necessary for a cue to be "Hoppe style" as I think we would both agree this is a Hoppe cue.

Mark,
You got some beautiful cues, I don't need to see the rest to know that you got some real gems. I agree the ivory ring doesn't always have to be there, but I think the ring and its location is what makes a person think Hoppe.

I see your Gus has a slim ring also. I have pics of a similar Gus setup that we had for sale.
