How a beginner has learned to beat me!

I frequently play pool at my house with my neighbor and his wife. His wife is a beginner who can't "hit a bull in the butt with a base fiddle", to give you an idea of her shooting ability.

But she hates to lose. And it does not improve her disposition any when her husband and I "rub it in" when we win. You can almost see the steam coming out of her ears each time she loses...

She will only play 8-ball and refuses to play 9-ball.

I have been giving her tips all along about defensive strategy, that if she does not have a shot, to leave the cue ball in a nasty spot, does not matter where object balls goes, just get that cue ball to wind up in a nasty spot, etc. I've also told her to hit the balls softly and leave them near the pocket (so it will be an easy shot next time around).

Last night I was playing her and I had 3 balls left on the table playing 8-ball (easy run-out). She had about 4 balls left on the table and shot about 6 times, each time leaving me without a shot.

After her 6th time of leaving me with no shot, she had 3 balls left and had managed to maneuver each ball in front of a pocket - so she was then able to run out.

I asked her if she was intentionally leaving the cue ball in a nasty spot with each of her previous shots... She smiled and said yes.

Then she proceeded to beat both her husband and myself several more times. She even wanted to play 9-ball and beat us at that too! She then had her first 9-ball break.

Her success is due to the following...

1. She hates to lose.

2. She has lost game after game after game, has become disgusted with losing all the time, and has decided to "get even"!

3. She has learned to move her balls closer to the pocket (with a gentle shot) so her next shot at the ball will be easier (8-ball).

4. She has learned to leave the cue ball in a position which gives her opponent no shot or an extremely difficult shot.

I read the following in a book recently...

Offense draws crowds; Defense wins championships...

BillyBob, a few months ago I was in Clicks in Richardson TX and was told of a conversation a friend of mine had with Bob Vanover. He asked Bob what he looked for playing 8-Ball, Bob said "Ball in hand". He continued, asking what he looked for next. Bob's answer: "Ball in hand, again". I didn't hear the conversation first hand, but I've watched Bob play many times and if you've ever seen him play, you'd have NO DOUBT that he answered this way.

Sounds like your friends wife has figured out a very important aspect of the game! :)

Later,
Bob

Wait!!!! Are we sure Billy Bob is not just letting her win? Billy Bob you've gotta stop hitting on your neighbor's wife (well, unless she's really hot).

Good going ...

She used her head to gain success. I preach that all the time, that a lessor
player can only beat a better player by using good defense (where the better
player will not be able to use their offense). These players that take a 10%
offense shot instead of a 85% defensive safety shot will always taste defeat.
Just play the odds - Make good decisions and shots, not bad ones.
