How Can Anyone Enjoy League?

Its excruciating to play and be a part of. Maybe its the game I played, the team I faced and the players that were part of both teams. We played English 8 ball.. Which for those who don't know, is like a kids game played on a small bar of sized table with snookerish styled pockets and pea sized balls. Now, I got a phone call asking if I could play from my brother in law, so since it was family and the game was important to him I had to say yeah. After driving for an hour to get there I turn up and the team were talking tactics...oh god! Its a 1 game shootout between 5 players, 5 single matches and 2 double matches making it first to 4 games wins. What tactics can you employ in a 1 game shoot out?

So, the way our team was going on about it I thought I'd take one for the team and go on first and try get them to a good 1-0 lead. The ref tossed the coin, I get the break and my opponent who was a middle aged woman shakes my hand and says good luck. I broke, made a ball and cleared the table in no more than 2 minutes. Woman refuses to shake my hand but she said well done or something along those lines. Next match...this was a marathon. There guy broke but hit it so soft it was barely legal. Left a huge cluster of like 10 balls and with a break like that its hardly surprising the match took 40 minutes! There guy after playing like 50 safties manages to pull his finger out and pot his last 3 balls and won. Next match was an old guy from there team against our youngest player of 17...and it showed. The old guy could play a bit and our guy was more of a snooker player and choose to attack everything, every shot he took was risky in that a miss would leave the guy wide open. He eventually missed and the old boy ran out. My doubles match was next and I played with my brother in law. Again against this woman and her husband. We won the toss, I break and run out, again in about 2 minutes. This woman again doesn't shake my hand and starts ranting at her team about how she hasn't had a shot tonight and why was she matched up against me. Can't say I blame her, id be pissed off if I travelled to a venue and didn't get a shot. The last 3 games were a blur, id lost all interest and was falling asleep it took so long. I do remember 1 match where the guy from the other team covered all 6 pockets...i mean had the balls right in the jaw. The black was wide open mid table and he kept just playing around with his 7th ball for 30 mins. He stepped up to the table each time and took 5 mins thinking about the shot....6 balls over each pocket, black wide open wtf is there to think about for so long?

All in all the 7 games took 3 and a bit hours, counting the two that took me less than 5 minutes. Afterwards their best player was saying at the top of his voice how lucky I was. Being in the pissed off mood I was I didn't let it go. It ended up with him making a rash proposition to play me for money. When I asked what spot he wanted he flipped completely shouting about how he doesn't need a spot. It ended with me taking £300 off him in the space of 20 minutes, and a lot of pushing and shoving between 5 or so guys. I took his money, handed him a £20 back for a taxi ride home and ripped the rest up and threw it on the table, and with that announced my departure and retired from ever playing in a league again!

This is what English 8 ball (played the wrong way) can do to people.

I used to love English pool when I was young, but players like the ones you described really turned me off the game. I do feel a bit sorry for that woman you played, though, lol.

Sounds like you were playing in a crap standard league to crap old rules. Most leagues got rid of those years ago.

My E8B league is split into a singles league on a Monday and a team league on a Thursday. Both are best of 11's. The singles league matches rarely take 90 minutes and the matches rarely take more than two hours.

Best of 11 sounds a bit better, but its the game as a whole that ruins the fun. I've tried single leagues before and again, same old story. It seems if a player can't match up with your ability to run out they become safety orientated. And yes, the standard was shocking as were the rules... EPA... *shudder*

Try blackball rules. Much more attacking and interesting but with the opportunity to play safe if your opponent is silly enough to let you back on the table and a clearance is not obvious.

Of course, safety is a feature of rotation games too..

I've played blackball a few times and it was the best of a bad bunch. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the games I play in have safety in there but its the type of safety that pisses me off. Covering a pocket I can live with as long as you have no clearance available, but rolling up behind a ball because you messed up position is a god awful rule, especially when you don't have to contact a cushion to make it legal.

So to summarize, you had a bad experience with a bunch of wankers (did I pronounce that right?) and therefore all leagues suck. Is that what you're saying?

That league doesn't sound like much fun and I wouldn't play in it either. However, that does not mean that all leagues are bad or not enjoyable.

Sounds like typical league night to me.

Many nights have I waited till the last match, to play, only to see the clock past midnight. The worst night was playing in a room with one table. The night was dragging and I didn't start my match till 1:30 am, I ended up winning 5-4 around 2:30 am.

I didn't mean to say all leagues are bad, in fact, did I even say that?

I've helped out friends and family to fill a spot on their teams in various leagues in snooker and UK 8 ball and all of which I've found regrettable decisions. There just isn't any fun to be had. There are always those players that think its The Crucible. The players that think its life or death. The players that think the slower they play the better they play. The players that make you wonder how the manages to decide what clothes to wear on a morning because they can't decide what shot to take even though its right there in front of them. The players that get too competitive over a game of pool. The players that carry the league rule book close to their heart at all times and can't get it out quick enough when a questionable foul was made. I could go on and on about why the players in particular in the leagues I've played in make it god awful to play in. And yes, the players make it bad to play in because the leagues are set up in such a fashion to allow these players to carry on being wankers (you nailed it btw ;-)!). So I come to the conclusion that its down to the leagues format.

I guess it was implied by the title "How Can Anyone Enjoy League."

Clearly you've had the worst of experiences and I don't blame you for not wanting more.

I think every league has all the player-types that you mention. Our leagues have a mechanism for dealing with excessively-slow players, and rule nazis, and Van Boening-wannabes, etc. They all fall under the general "sportsmanship" rule. Unfortunately, if you try to use that rule to make the night more enjoyable (or just move faster), you're the nit.

I will consider myself lucky that I still look forward to my league night; without it, there's no other competition besides just showing up at a bar and playing whoever is there.

There are always those players that think its The Crucible.

I stood in for a mate's pub team a few years go and one of the guys on the opposite team turned up in a waistcoat. It would have been bad enough if he was a good player, but he was god awful and, of course, safety obsessed.

I genuinely think people forget why they play the game in the first place at times, which I suppose could be true for a lot of things.

You tore up the money? £280? I don't know the conversion but that's gotta be near $400 US right?

That's baller m8! :D

I offered him the money back to try and calm the pushing and shoving before it got more serious and he not so politely refused. I threw a 20 his way so he wasn't walking home, tore the rest up and went on my way. Spoke to my brother in law this morning and he said the guy didn't take the money, or any of his team they just left. Oh well, a bit of sticky tape and the team I played for will have beer money for a few seasons!

Is league night supposed to be different? That pretty much describes to a "t" a night of any league in which I've played!

In response to the original question. I am looking forward to playing VNEA league again after 16 years. I will be a sub until Christmas and hope to play at least 6 nights.

I miss the pressure of the last game and needing a big win to win the round and pulling it out.
