I hate playing in the ring game because it comes down to luck and who you follow. I hate it when everyone waits to the end to lag so they can follow the worst player.

Ideas I have on making the game better. IMO.
1. Names are drawn out of a hat after every game.
2. Everyone starts out with a certain amount of chips/money, if you sell out, than you pay the person following you, when you run out of money, you are out. Just because you screwed up, doesn't mean everyone has to pay.
3. Have a chance to roll out, at least one, If you roll out and I decide to let you shoot and you run out, than I pay the price, not the person before you.
I have played in many ring games and never got a decent shot, LOL

Can anyone add to this.

thats just the nature of ring games. Theres usually one guy in the game whos either weak or just off and he is setting up the guy behind him every time.........or theres one guy who is leaving nothing when it shoots, and the guy following never gets a shot.

Ive played with money on the 4 and 7 .......so the person with the 10 breaks and the person with the 4 is next, 7 next....so this works in games with 3 or 4 players. Flipping coins after every game or 3 games......etc

Problem with the coin flips and more than 3 or 4 players is it might take as long to determine order as it does to play...plus people cant remember when its there shot.

or just determine an order and stick with it and play long enough to even out the luck........sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you

The best player doesn't always....

Playing in any ring-game is the same.. 9 or 10-ball. Because the best player isn't always going to win... you can get 4-5 players at a time to play. Not everyone has an "equal" shot... but it does even things out a bit (assuming no shenanigans..lol.. who uses that word anymore?). That's how you can draw more players into the game... I might not be able to beat "player A" heads-up, ... but in a ring-game- anything can happen.. I just have to get out before he gets the chance to shoot. Or hope the player before him leaves him badly.

What we do in these cases...
A: You have X # of players in the game.
B: Flip coin /Draw pills for rotation order
C: Play 2X number of games... anytime after that point, ANYONE can call "SHAKE" (pill bottle)... and a redraw is done. If noone calls for a re-draw... then the games continue.. The redraw can be at anytime past Game 2X IE: 2X+1, 2X+2, 2X+3...etc...
D: Once you have redrawn... it starts over again, and you must play 2X games before calling "SHAKE".

How real ring games are played;

(1). Pull pills (if your pool hall doesn't have a bottle/pills then that's a joke... make your own I guess)
(2). Change the order every 5 games (pull pills again)

That is all.

Koreans play ring games a little differently from what I've seen in America:

-Rock paper scissors to determine initial order. (We use RPS for all decisions here! Except in tournaments, then you lag for opening break.)

-Only the person who missed before the winner of the game pays (but for B&Rs everyone pays).

-The paying player shoots after the breaker. This gives him a chance to win his money back. (This could lead to two players "hogging" the table, but in practice that doesn't happen much, at least in the games I've played). This rule keeps the order switched up automatically.

-You pay on every scratch (appx. 1/2 the normal bet). This goes to pay table time (until that's paid) and then after becomes a bonus for the winning player.

-Ball in hand after a scratch. (Personally I think this is a terrible rule. I've been in many games where I'm left no shot. Try to hit the ball, miss. Then you loose 1.5 times the bet from the scratch and the loss. This is really hard for me mentally.)

Aside from the BIH issues, I enjoy this style of ring game. The order changes automatically which is a nice feature.
