How Do different Cues Hit in Comparison

I am interested in buying a custom cue that I can play with, but don't have a good idea of how any cues on the market hit. I've been playing pool over 20 years but haven't experimented with too many cues. I started playing with a meucci, then changed to a joss which has a stiffer shot to it (in my opinion) which I prefer. Also owned a schon for a short time. Can someone give me a general idea how different cues hit in comparison to a joss? Thanks for any input you might have on this subject.

About the only way I know is for your to try them out. Customs are kind of in their own ball parks...but many cue sellers will let you try before you buy, one advantage they have over the internet. Feel and hit is such a subjective thing it's really hard to describe. Your Joss has a steel joint, I believe...so you might begin by researching customs using the same joint if you're looking for the same hit.

Do you have any friends with custom cues? Perhaps they'd let you try them out...

IMO, and I'm stickin to it ... :) the stick means very little in terms of the hit. The three biggest factors to hit variation are shaft diameter, shaft taper, and the type of tip that's on it.

You could take your Joss, put an elkmaster soft tip on it and think it was a different stick. Conversly you could screw your shaft on another butt and never know the difference in hit.

I see that you're in upstate SC and have a Gulyassy j/b. Mike's cues might be a good place to start. But, like has already been said, feel and hit are subjective, what feels great to me might not to you.

Thanks for your input on this. Going from shooting with the joss to shooting with the schon was like night and day. The schon was a much stiffer hit to me. Maybe it was the way the shaft was tapered or the type of wood. I would really like to find a stick (shaft) that was somewhere between the two.

I think there are several factors that dictate hit.

1. but material and how it is put together full splice half splice cored all hit a little differant

2. shaft . laminated hits differant than regular . taper and diameter makes a differance also

3 ferrule and joint collar material offer differant hits

4 tips hard med soft all change the hit
