How do you chalk up?

To the OP,

As a habit, I chalk every stroke. I mentally note where my tip hit, and have a feel where the chalk isn't, and do a resurface of the tip with the chalk. On critical strokes, I make sure (I physically look at my tip while chalking) to ensure that my next stroke is right on.

It's how I find my flaws. :D

I'm not perfect, only striving to be.

I do the same. It actually helps your eyes to focus on something which is very close. Also, looking and chalking the tip can be used as a concentration tool. I always look and chalk my tip on 14.1 break shots for instance.

I play R/H, put the bumper on the floor and turn with my right fingers. Then use my bridge hand and chalk from the edge using a 1/4 moon sweeping action and the edge of the chalk. I seldom go all the way to the top, never miscued up there.

I don't use an aming system, I do it by feel. Well by feel and brail mostly cause I can't see that well up that close. :D

What brought this up? I was reading a thread on tips here in the forum. Someone in there claims to have worn out a tip in less than a month. I was going to bring it up right there in that thread, but I started thinking maybe he just likes new tips or whatever. Maybe worn out to him is only slightly worn to me. I've been using the same Elk master for 4 months now and I expect to get at least another 4 months out of it. At least!

You folks that are using the tips up, how are you chalking? I've seen people chalk with a vengeance. Does that really make it better? When I chalk up I lay the chalk lightly on top of the tip. Then give the stick a little spin. As it is spinning I move the chalk down to the edge. This method can miss the very top middle so I'll give a very light swipe or two to the middle of the tip and I'm done.

How do you chalk up?

I put the bumper of the cue on the floor and tilt it about 30 degrees, apply the chalk with a light brushing motion working from the center of the tip to the side while turning the cue with my bridge hand. I alway chalk with my grip hand, tilting the cue to avoid getting chalk on my grip hand or the shaft. I ALWAYS put the chalk on the rail face up!

shoot with right hand, chalk with left- 1/4 moon swipes. Every single shot. I always put the chalk down chalk side up. BUT I have been guilty, many times, of squeaking. Will try to work on that- sorry :(

This is not true, unless you are applying immense force to the chalk. Chalking from center to edge cause chalk to cake up near the middle of the tip and leaves the edges near chalkless. Going from edge to center spreads the chalk more evenly and leaves chalk where it's needed the most, around the edge. JMTC
Nope. I don't use immense force; just enough pressure to transfer the chalk. And I go in a circular motion working from the middle out. Hey, as long as the chalk is spread evenly, we are in agreement! :D
