Curtis, I don't know if you remember me but I've seen met you a couple of times at the GAT events and at Mark's place, I'm the big guy named Zack...lol. At any rate, you're already better than I am but I would suggest playing stronger players as often as possible.

Just my $.02, I'll see you around if I can ever make it to another GAT stop.

Zack

Well, I would suggest gambling but given your age... practice when you can and take whatever tips you can from whomever. Maybe find yourself a coach if you are that serious about the game. One of our rooms in San Diego gives a kid here free time for cleaning the tables granted that he also does well in school. Whatever you decide to do, stay in school and go to college!

Billiards DOES NOT EQUAL (couldn't find the a way to make the "=" sign with the slash through it) instant gratification you'd expect from this computer age of "click click click".

At your age, find a way to gain some mental discipline. Military, marial art, or a degree comes immediately to my mind.

You have stroke. You have respect. You lack something you're looking for.

Only YOU can find that.

The only way I can help is to point that out.

Play long sessions against slightly better players (eight hours or more).
And watch good players whenever you get the chance. Find someone whose style you like and seems to fit you and observe them closely.

when i first picked up a cue i playing money games with my cousins and lost alot of my money but the person who's house we were at was like my hero back then cause he had his own cues, table and a professional case plus he had coins, trophies, jackets and shirts from winning big tournaments and winning a team championship at state here. This was about seven to eight years ago and now this guy is nowhere near the level i play at and i even offered to play him for his jackets and coins which he holds so dearly to him but he won't do it LOL. So playing money matches and pressure events got me to play better but also practicing alot on my form, what i think i have trouble in, and understanding how the balls react also helped alot too.

Jr, I've worked in a few pool rooms, and the young guys that came up back maybe 15 years ago all had good strokes, and could make great shots. The biggest difference between the best one, and the pack was patience and the lack of ego. He could forget about shooting some flashy 3 rail draw shot, and bury someone with a well thought out safe or a good game plan. So, that's my advise to a young dude. Learn when fire away, and when to duck, and everyone will be impressed with your game when you win. Watch the older good players, take what you like from their game, and keep learning....

most of all, have a great time doing it!

Get a good, accomplished coach not just a good player. Follow his/her advice no matter what happens to your game in the short term.
study the fundamentals
practice shots vs shooting whatever comes up

If I had to pick one thing that made the most difference in my game it would be: Always step into your shot. Do not stand close to the table and kick your leg back. If you don't know what I mean, watch 99% of all players where you play. They all step in the bucket. It doesn't work in baseball and it doesn't work in pool or an other sport for that matter. If you're not already doing this it will mess you up royaly for weeks or months. But if you persevere
you will find that it always keeps your body in aligmnet with the shot. What will mess you up is now you have to stand away from the table and step into the shot. I sometimes stand several feet away and take 2-4 steps in before getting down to shoot. "Daly's Book of Billiards" Chapter ll.

A good drill: Put the cb on the spot - Hit the head rail at the center diamond wiht a dead ball . The ball must come back and either hit your cue tip or the center diamond on the foot rail. This tells you right away if you know where center ball is and if you're stroking straight thru.

Play all the games because each one builds unique skills. I mean 3 cushion billiards too.
