How do you get new people playing pool?

I have been discussing this with a friend of mine recently. It seems we need some new blood in pool. How does that happen these days? Any ideas?

Tonight

Tonight we are doing a clinic for 40 people, divided up between 4 instructors
These clinics will run for 6 weeks.Every week will be a new group of people which have signed up for the classes The players levels rate from beginner to about APA level 6. We are also reaching out to schools, foster care facilities, hospitals. Instead of a night out at the bar, restaurant, movies etc they can come to the pool hall, receive instruction, have a beer, food or whatever.

If new players can make just a few more shots( even if it's a straight in shot at 1 ft away) it becomes more fun to them. Fun is the key.
And we make sure they have fun.

Everyone has to start somewhere. A pool table with a light on is much better than one with the lights off.

P.S. Everything is included, table time and instructions for one low price.
FREE,,,,yes for free

New People to Pool

That is awesome, truly awesome I havent seen many times there was 40 people in a pool room much less 40 new players except maybe at a tournament. I think you are right somehow the instruction has to be there for the new player to get caught on and yes it has to be fun.

I have (4) step grandsons, ages 17, 16, 9, and 5. Only the 5 y/o has any interest in Pool. The other (3) are in to WII, Text Messaging, Girls, and Video Games.

Where I live we have a Ladies Pool Group that plays weekly, they have an instructor who give her time for free. I tell people women it.

Sadly nothing to promote Men's pool, or New Men into playing pool..

Take the internet away, get rid of video games, and do away with cable television. Face it, the majority of people in the pool rooms these days are mid 30's and older. We started playing pool back in the day when there weren't so many other options. It's the same over here. The younger players are far and few between.

If you want new blood in pool, come around the poolroom near me on a Saturday night. Sooner or later someone's going to get hit over the head with a pool cue. :D

I am 29 and started playing 1 1/2 yrs ago. Now on three league teams and....

Oh shi t. 29 isn't young anymore.

Of course there are still younger people, but not like it used to be.

If you mean new people learning to play serious pool, then you need to inspire them to do so.

Movies and television shows are always useful. House professionals playing in the poolroom, or at least a good shortstop in that role if no pros are available.

I think if you can produce an exciting pool related product for television, then new players would follow. The UFC is a fantastic example of that. They created the Ultimate Fighter as a vehicle to introduce and sell their fighters (via coaches and assistant coaches, and future stars). Once they had an audience who knew the fighters it grew pretty rapidly.

I honestly believe, if you could create some kind of reality/documentary type program which showcased a small group of players (very small, you want the audience to build attatchments), people would be tuning in to root for their new fav players.

If people care about a particular participant...they will watch them do most anything.

If Shane Van Boening was matched up against Mika Immonen in horse shoe throwing contest, we'd watch them on ustream wouldn't we?

cherchez la femme

The secret is to get the wives and mothers somehow interested. The old man probably had some pool experience but has just about given it up as a pastime because his is wife not interested. Probably because she thinks that it is lowdown activity. Dope, booze, gambling , loose women,. (Damn ,it sounds good to me!) You get the mother going the kids will go and you have a family night out for pizza , beer, and pool.
Free beginner lessons by an enthusiastic, mature, female teacher for mom on a family night with discount time , pizza and beer. If you could get a nice pool hall to offer that type of thing . Dad could say their going out for pizza and not even tell them where they are going. The kids would be introduced to
the game and everybody would get hooked. It's up to the owners to promote their business. He'd have to work the room and introduce himself etc., etc.
I used to own a successful retail business and planning and executing marketing gets me excited. So I'll stop myself before I get too far of topic.

Moms are the secret to getting young blood into the game . IMNSHO.
Moms play tennis , kids play tennis. Supported by a unified national
association that markets to them.

Gotta get new people wanting to play for fun before they want to play to improve. I’ll invite people out to play on a Friday or Saturday night, when everyone one is going out for fun. Get them in the room and keep it fun. I’ll keep my focus off the game and more about being social and having fun, so I don’t run over them on the table. When I keep mind on having fun and not focused on the game, I can blame by misses on the lack of focus and play closer to a new persons level without it looking like I’m laying down on them.

If I gather up enough people for a Friday night outing, I’ll sit out a bunch of games and coach some but not too much. Just enough on both sides to get a little friendly competition going, try and make them feel like they are getting somewhere.

After a couple outings teach them one or tricks per session depending on how much they want to soak up. They’ll develop an interest on their own or they won’t. I’ve been able get 2 of my buddies into the sport. One of them just got a cue for himself.

The youth of today well that’s a different deal. As a kid I found pool in a bowling alley. My mom thought she was taking me to bowl. That didn’t work out too well. But in today’s world its video games, electronics etc.

I’m curious if that is going to be one of those things pool will to have to live with. Maybe new blood won’t enter the sport at such a young age. Perhaps more people will get interested in pool in their early to mid 20’s once they’ve gotten past the teen stuff provided to them in today’s life.

I’d say the youth interested in school sports have a better chance of finding pool to be an interest at a young age. I have no idea how to target them, maybe someone else here does.

Have the pool room owner "hire" someone to give pool lessons. The person needs to have some people skills to make sure that the students enjoy taking the lessons.

I've seen students become serious about practicing once they are given the proper tools to excel.

That means more money in the cash register at the end of the night and more "buzz" about pool.
