How do you like the idea of a pool lovers club?
Regular meeting of pool players who like to discuss pool, look at beautiful cues, try out different cues, and play pool for fun as a recreation.

I have attened this kind of meetings in Taiwan and the whole thing went very well. There was no gambling, and most members were middle class working man with a family who like to play pool as a recreation. They have a lot of nice cues, Southwest, Gina, Paul Mottey, Gilbert, Hunter...etc.

The members pay a monthy fee and they gather on a weekly basis to socialize with each other and share their interest on cues and the game of pool. One time, I saw a guy came in with over ten brand new Whitten cases. Another time I met a collector who took a few super fancy Southwest with him and let everyone try them out. Some top professionals are also in attendance from time to time and they will answer questions, try out various cues and express their opinions, and help players with their game.

Um, aren't these already in existence? More commonly referred to as "Pool Halls"? :D

Well, it is a bit different. It is sort of similiar to the meeting with car lovers in a car collector's club, or wine lovers going to wine tasting parties.

Usually, the club works out a deal with a particular pool hall so they have a flat rate and they will have exclusive usage of certain tables for a certain amount of time on a weekly basis.

Members pay a monthy fee. Most people go to these meetings because they like to talk about cues and try out different cues, some also go to play some friendly games with their friends and to socialize. There is no gambling. The whole atomshpere is very friendly and sort of academic.

It is kind of like what happened in the Az room in the Derby.

My question is, would you like to see such a club in your local area?

Actually, you are right!:) :)

I was thinking about a more physical version, one in which the members can touch and try out each other's cues, one which they can play games and have a drink together afterward...

Personally I do think there is a niche for this, even in areas with actual Pool Halls. Firstly in many Pool Halls it would be considered extremely rude to walk up to someone and ask them what kind of cue they have, what it cost and where they got it, let alone asking to try it out.

Secondly most Pool players go to the Pool Hall for something specifically competitive - A tournament, a league match or a money game. In competitive conditions not only do many players not want to socialize (except with league team members) but it discourages new and learning players from even talking to the better players for fear of putting them off their game.

Some just go to practice, but even then many people would not want to socialize at the same time unless invited to do so, and again many new and learning players would never feel comfortable asking the better players questions.

I like the idea of a "club" format where people come specifically just to share and learn, rather than compete or prepare for competition. This would mirror what we do in our online forums a lot more, and provide a great way to open communication between players of different skill levels and experience.

You have articulated my idea perfectly! Thank you so much.

I did not suggest this as a profit making venture, rather a way to promote pool and its equipment. It would be a great service to the recreational players and the up and coming learners. Also, it can bring some business to local pool halls, and create a channel for pool cue makers to showcase their work. In general, it is meant to be a win win situation for all those involved.

I have such club in my area. Too bad the population in the club is dying. Anyway to boost it up?

I'm afraid it would interfere with the meetings of the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalo.

I would love something like this once a month in my area. Hell they might already have it and I dont know about it.

Great idea, send me a Plane Ticket, and pre Paid hotel room, and I will come and CRITIQUE you idea. Might need a little help with my Chinese.................... ;)

It is a real good idea. I feel it would bring out the players who are just plain pool nuts, and want to express that. I might start a club at my house! I just finished my billiard room, and the table is coming today!!:) Who wants to be Grand Poobah?:D

So how long do you all think it would take before these clubs from different areas started talking smack and challenging eachother?......

Pick a Pool hall in our area, to have a get together, Great idea, bring all your Cues & Cases to show others, play some 8,9 or 1P, hang out, go get some BBQ or Hooters wings etc etc. I would love to have a Tampa/St.Pete/Clearwater etc etc "Bay Area" get together. There is a very old Pool hall in Tampa called Bakers we could try & do it there, and we could also tour a couple other sites with history in the area. Maybe we could talk to the room owners and get a special deal and pitch in.
What do you guys think? anyone in the Tampa bay area interested? we could take pictures and then post them after in a thread and tell all about the fun we had.

This ....

is what kind of happens at big tournaments where cuemakers are showing off their cues. This 'type' of environment is created in small groups, and usually gets rather academically oriented about the sport.

Perhaps you could arrange a local or visiting pro come and do a show and/or clininc for your members? How about contacting a local Billiards equipment retailer and have them bring down a bunch of cues and accessories for your members to try out?

Yes, if everyone pays a small amount of money such as $30 -$50 and then you send the total to a pro to invite him over, do some challenge match, give a clinic, and may be even have a gathering afterwards, I think the members would really appreciate it.

Also, some means to offer information to the members is important to keep the club alive. There can be seminars on cue repair, do your own tip, jump shot clinic, break shot clinic, discussion on pool instructional books, matches review, and so on...

May me you can even arrange a group tour to one of the bigger tournament. If you have a lot of people, you can get a better rate with hotel, tour bus, and may be even a discount on the pass.

The atomsphere is very important in this kind of gathering. If the players do not enjoy interacting with one another, then there is no way to keep it going. So, holding various functions is important to help the players to have something to look forward to, and to have a chance to get to know each other.

I like your idea Richard for a non-competitive meeting of like minded pool enthusiasts. Some of the activities would interest me and others would not.

If any of the others here in the U.S. start this, please let us know how it works out for you. I can see where pooling your cash resources could bring you results that you normally could not afford.
Thanks,
