How do you play this shot?

try to make the 1 and call safety and let them deal with the hard cut/bank, lol. I'd porpbably do what koop said.

Those of you that have The Beards book, look on page 138. For those that do not have a copy, I'd suggest getting one. :)

CueTable Help

I would not say, it is a high percentage shot, but it's possible.

At my skill level, I would make the cut about 90% of the time or get down the table about 90% of the time, but only do both <50%.

Depending on the perceived banking skill of my opponent, I would either try

1) The safe of the short rail as described earlier. which leaves some rosk of a foul if not properly ecxecuted.

2) Call "safe", cut the ball softly toward the pocket trying to miss and leave it hanging, using left English to leave the cue ball on the short rail just past the center, as below

)END

If he missed the bank, hopefully I could use the position of the one ball to get sahpe on the 8 almost anywhere on the table.

Statistically speaking, if you make the ball 90% of the time and get down table 90% of the time you should do both 81% of the time. If you do both say 49% of the time then it is quite possible you're shooting 70% on each outcome.

The cut with bottom right has too much scratch potential.

The cut with left to go around looks too tough. A scratch in the bottom left hand corner or the top side is also too high.

Rolling up behind the ball looks good except such a soft roll can lead to the table rolling out, you missing the ball or thinning it off the side rail and not getting a rail. You could give up ball in hand, or you could let your opponent see the 8 for a straight back bank.

Another shot would be to cut the ball into the rail and seek to hang the one and take the cue ball to the bottom side rail and take away the straight back bank by blocking the pocket with the one. It would be hard for your opponent to play safe. The danger here is that you make the one and you have to play a tough bank for the win.

Another shot would be roll up and move the one slightly towards the pocket and try to leave your opponent jacked up over the one.

I definitely like the safe more than trying to spin the ball for big money. For cheap, I would likely try the bottom right shot as I do think its possible to hit above or below the side and then come back up for a decent shot at the 8.
