How do you seal a ferrule?

Hi Guys,

I wonder if someone can offer me some advise.

I already have a lathe and would like some step by step instructions on how to seal a new ferrule and what cuemakers use to seal there ferrules.


Before i have used normal CA and a paper towel. Put a drop of glue on the ferrule and used a paper towel whilst spinning it on the lathe.

Maybe i am doing it wrong but i cant seem to get a really nice finish, the last ferrule i did seemed to have very small lines across the ferrule. I ended up sanding it a little and making the finish more matte rather than glossy.

A detailed explanation on how you seal ferrules would be gratefully appreciated, getting frustrated here

some ferrule materials will not shine to a gloss. i like real ivory and ivory x for this reason. i got some juma and it doesnt shine great. always on the dull side. i use chris hightowers sealer. sand with 400 600 1000 then seal with paper towel. always using new sandpaper is a key also.

Seals are very hard to work with and their breath smells like fish.

i use buffing material on my ivory x and ivory ferrules.

I go all the way to 8,000 to polish ferrules the juma will look like like glass when done.
