How do you trim a cuetip?

I was just wondering if there is a device out there that would trim a 14mm cuetip to fit my 11.75mm ferrule? I would really like to try out a moori or sniper tip, but the only sizes I could find for these tips, and numerous others, is 14mm. I don't have any professional cue-craftsmen in my area to make the tip adjustment, so I need to do it by myself.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Well, first off if you never worked, or replaced a tip, the layered ones can be a pain to work with. When you take a 14mm and cut it down to 11.75mm, the tip will seem really tall, so you might want to shorten it also. It's very hard to cut a layered tip down that much by hand, and get it even, and round, but it can be done. These tips are TOUGH!

*After selling my lathe, I now use my 1/2" multi speed electric drill, secured in my vise, with the right pin chucked in it for whatever shaft I'm working on. Don't laugh!, I can adjust the speed, lock the trigger and it works just like my lathe did without the live center, or steady rest.

When I do them, I glue the tip on dead center...I use super glue gel, then I use a razor knife to trim it to the ferrule. I learned this from Leonard Bludworth at the SBE a million years ago:D. Then
I use a flat metal file to smooth and shape the tip. You can also use one of those cue cubes for shaping. Then I use some 400 wet dry sandpaper til real smooth, then burnish with a piece of leather, or hardwood.

>>>>Practice a few tips on a cheapy K-mart cue.....then on your player!:D

hope that helps, Gerry

No Power tools needed

I use this Plastic pencil sharpener looking thing. It works great, but, you do have to be careful to keep the ferrule parallel to the blade. Pay attention and go slow and there is no problem.

The slow, gruesome way that takes a couple of hours: wrap one layer of masking tape around your ferrule to protect it, then patiently grind off the excess leather with a coarse metal file or sandpaper. Finish with finer file or sandpaper. Burnish and shape with an Ultimate Tip Tool.

The variable-speed drill routine is much better. Suitable pin(s) can be purchased from this ebay seller:

I don't subscribe to the "too tall tip" theory. Don't remove any more leather than you must to achieve the dome you want.

11.75mm !!!! holy christ !!!!

just pull out the eraser from a pencil.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Well, I have a Mcdermott Intimidator III shaft. I prefer the feel of a thinner ferrule. Maybe I should just forget the idea of playing with a Moori or Sniper tip, at least on a 11.75mm ferrule. I'm currently playing with a good ole single-layer Triangle tip now which has a great feel and holds chalk very well. I just wanted to experiment with many different tips as many people here have recommended.

Would a 13mm Moori produce as much spin as an 11.75 mm Triangle tip? Would it produce more? Less?

With a good stroke it will produce all you will ever need. Get a stroke not a tip.
The pencil sharpener trimmer I use will trim down to 11.75. I do have a couple extra.

Believe it or not, alot of players use 11.75-12.5mm shafts. I ordered both my shafts that came with my cue to be 12mm, but they were 11.75. I got used to that size, and it works fine. You can still spin the hell out of the cueball, etc. The only thing that is more difficult is hitting the cueball dead center.

Hi. Are you the original owner of the shaft? The reason I ask is the I-3 shaft ships with a soft Moori tip. Perhaps you have already played with it in its original configuration and hence you would have played with a Moori.
