How high should I hang my light?

I'm having a new table installed soon, and I figured it would be best to hang the light before it arrives. Ideally, how many inches above the playing surface do I want the light to hang? It's a 9 foot table, and I purchased this 72" light for it ...

You want to be able to stand at the end of the table, cue in hand, and lean into the table for a shot without the light getting in your way.

36" over the table minimum.

Diamond billiards website has a page with all the dimensions that you need. I know you don’t have a diamond light, but the distance from floor to light should be the same.

At least 36 to 40 inches. Hang light over table. If it looks like it is "spotlighting" small areas, move it up 6 inches at a time until you get the lighting pattern you want. Try to get equal lighting at the head and foot rail as compared to the center.

Thanks! So it looks like Diamond recommends that the light be 78" from the ground. What is the height of a standard table?

32 inches from floor to the surface of the slate I think is standard. But you have to remember
that Diamond lights use light diffusers.
You will have to experiment with yours
to get the best light pattern.

The one in the pic is about 30 inches over the table and it's close to the same kind of light as yours, except it's slightly shorter than yours. I've had no problems with the light getting in the way, but I'm only 5'-9" tall. I just don't think the Diamond light mounting specs are going to work for your light. When they are mounted that high it tends to expose the lamps to anyone sitting in the room.

I do think that the Diamond lights are the way to go for best lighting and with the diffusers the bright light doesn't really bother anyone in the room.

Bottom of shade should be 6' off the ground or 42" (3-1/2') above the table surface. This will be high enough for the end shades to provide enough light to the ends of the table, and high enough that beginner players won't constantly bang their cue shafts in to the lights on their follow-throughs.

Thanks! After taking in everyone's advice, that's about exactly what I was thinking (40-45") to start. I can obviously fine tune it once I have the table. The key is getting it installed before the table is in place and level so I won't have to worry about standing on the table or building some kind of scaffolding.
