How is the pool scene in Wichita Kansas?

I am curious if any of the locals from the area can tell me how the pool scene is (in Wichita)?

Are there many really strong local players, and road players that come through there often?

Many weekly tournaments?

One last thing (which is not pool related, so I hope it is okay that I ask), is it very dangerous to live in Wichita?

I been in Louisville for the last 2 years, so hopefully it is not any worse then Louisville (crime wise).

Thanks.

Don't go.... you might get raped.

Wichita is a pool town, if you want it you can find it. Try Gabe Owen down at the cue shop

almost any day, and if Gabe isn't there, you can find his dad. $5 tournaments are the

norm, and you can find them most nights. We just had The Bobby Wells memorial

tournament, and some great players ended up playing in it. I have lived here a little over

four years, and am not really known here, but if you want to meet the players there was a

challenge match played each week with it being posted on Youtube. Moving here I was

able to clock all the local heat from the privacy of my living room. I am still impressed with

some of the locals

I lived in Wichita for a couple of years. The pool scene was great while I was there. There were tournaments or leagues every night. In those days there were two good pool bars on s. Hydraulic (Shooters and Rumors) that had owners who are good players and they were always stirring up action. At shooters, if they had 8 people in the house that wanted to play a tournament they would have one. Some nights they would have 3 or 4 tournaments. I've lived and played all over the US and the pool scene in Wichita was as good as anywhere.

Lots of great bar table players. Everyone from champs that have won the US Open and other guys who have beat Buddy Hall gambling to guys that can still put a 5-pack on you even though they are in their 60s. And lots and lots of good bar and league players. Of every level. If you want to find a friendly game and gamble you can always match up. Plus they have several great tournaments that draw players who are legends of the game. I remember one tournament the player list included:
Junior Brown
Gabe Owen
Cliff Joyner
Coy Lee Nicholson
Jesse Bowman
Jamie Bowman
Chad Vilmont
Danny Medina
Dave Matlock
James Walden
Dave Gomez

Even though you might not recognize some of these names they are all champions.

And a couple other guys from Tulsa I don't remember who played jam up. One of them got 2nd.

I don't know how much is still going on there but I suspect it hasn't changed all that much.

As far as dangerous...Overall crime rates there are about average with some really bad neighborhoods. I lived in one of the worst areas and it was no problem. I wasn't walking around at night though.

As far as danger in the pool scene...If you man up and deal square with everyone you'll be fine. Win, or lose, like a man and you'll be fine. Just like any bar or pool hall with a lot of gambling people don't have a lot of patience for BS. And it can get physical pretty quick.

If I wasn't married and found myself in Wichita I would jump back into the pool scene there in one second.
