when i was screwing together my cuetec one day it "slipped" around and the collar spun when the stick was all the way together. now there is a little gap and i took it to a local shop and they said just keep playing with it but i dont know about that. i have another stick that i play w/ this is mainly for friends to borrow and i'm thinking about making it a break stick w/ a nice hard tip. anyways how hard is this to fix, can i do it myself, or how much do you think a cue maker would charge me to fix it? is it worth it for a rather low end cue? thanks

i couldnt get a very good picture but basically there is a gap between the black and silver parts, it doesnt seem to move much, i cant tap it back down by hitting the groudn or w/ my hand, it will move it i put it on the stick and tighten it all the way down, i can almost get it flush again but not quite and it opens up again when you take the stick apart.
thanks again

broken insert

I just fixed one last weekend at the Illinois state tournament. What happened was the insert broke in half about half way in and it was out about 1/8 of an inch. I screwed the butt back on and pulled it out the rest of the way. Then glued it and put it back in the shaft and tapped it down. You have to line up the brake. I used epoxy to fix it. I don't know how long it will last. Butterflycues

I was doing repair for a pool hall that had cue-tecs for rentals and the same thing happened. I repaired as you did but it only lasted for a few weeks before breaking again. That is Delrin or some such plastic and doesn't glue very well.

I just noticed a customer shaft that did the same thing. That little black insert had broken out on him and half of it was still in there, so that there were enough threads left that he still could use it I guess. I noticed It when I went to screw a mandrel into It, and said to Myself "wait a minute that's not suppose to be like that" :D . It does remind Me of delrin, but does'nt seem as plyable, because most delrin I have does not break like that, altough as we know it does not glue well.

i'm not trying to be rude but i know that its broken, and now i know that it is common thing to break, but how hard is it to fix, should i attempt it myself, and how much will a cue maker charge me if i get a professional to do it? thanks for the replies guys

Off hand, I would have to say it would be impossible for you to fix. If you had some way to bore out the piece that is broke in that shaft and you had some way of making a new piece to go back in and if it could be glued in place and then faced you would still have to have a tap made (pretty expensive) as the cue-tec cue has an odd thread and there are no taps made for it.

You can probably buy a new shaft from a cue-tec dealer for around 50.00. That is about 1/3 the price of having a tap made.

why couldnt i do this? just pull it out and glue it back in??

you could try

by just glueing it. If you can remove the piece to put glue on it, or, as a second thought if the offending piece is only a couple threads, why not use a drill or sharp scapel and remove the threads on it. leave enough to just align the pin, the piece will not interfere with tightening the shaft now as there should be plenty of solid internal threads for the butt to pull into! In other words the broken piece is now just a washer or spacer in there!
If I could remove it, and since you have no lathe: screw the piece onto your butt, though first coat the butt screw with a silicone paste to act as a glue release agent. Just nough silicone to keep stray glue from adhering to it. put a little epoxy, the slower cure stuff is stronger, and screw it all together and let it cure for 24 hours or so! If you are lucky it may work, if not you may need a whole new cue!
I would just buy a shaft

thanks, i dont really want to buy a new shaft because i dont think the stick is worth it, unless someone has a cheap used one. i never use it anyways, i really wanted to make it my breaking stick but i could just buy one instead of spending 50-100 on a shaft for this one. i guess i'll try to fix it and if i mess it up oh well, we'll call it a learning experience.

i got it out without messing anything up, now how should i glue it back in? any ideas for glue? just regular super glue? thanks.

Best glue is structural epoxy. Most practical glue is Loctite Prism instant adheasive #401 surface insensitive or #411 toughened. Prism instant glues are expensive but most pool halls have some for reattaching tips.
