How NOT to ship 2 grand worth of wood!!!

So....I decide to go outside for a moment and discover my ebony shipment laying on steps of back porch......in the rain!!!

Then, on top of the boxes being wet(only on outside thankfully), I see how it was packed....

Luckily, it seems only one piece escaped the gaping whole in the box..

Note the "creative" packing materials.....

I expect the supplier to replace the piece, but I really don't understand the mentality of packing. It is OBVIOUS there was never enough filler and the wood was allowed to slide back and forth more than a foot in the box.

Was hoping to see a return address label to see who I should avoid, heh. That's pretty horrible packaging for an expensive shipment.

It is the only issue I have had with them, so I won't share the name. I don't doubt they will make it right....just frustrated and glad more wasn't lost....

Heh, if it was a box of purpleheart I could care less if they threw it at me from 6 states away ... but ebony? That stuff is like gold lately!

The box among other things is inadequate for this type of shipment.
It's as if the seller has never shipped wood before.

"they" apologized and are sending another piece. Had it just been packaged properly to begin with, they would have saved quite a bit of money....

I wouldn't assume that this is all on the shipper.
I run a warehouse and we ship/receive 100 packages a day. I've had things come in that would make a 3rd grader shake their head in disbelief. Thing is.....upon further inspection, a lot of those packages end up having been been damaged and re-taped by the carrier before delivery. As part of the re-tape it is clear that packaging is lost.
I've also received pictures of some of our shipments after our customer has received them and they look nothing like they did when they left our facility.
UPS is our biggest offender, Fedex Ground is a bit better and Fedex Express does a great job overall. All of these carriers have delivered some pretty ugly stuff though so none are close to perfect.
We also have some vendors who dont have a clue how to ship via small parcel. This is proven by their items consistantly arriving in questionable shape.
The items we ship and receive can easily cost 10 times what that ebony did.
Just an observation and a suggestion that you not lay all of the blame on your supplier.

In this case..it IS all the shipper. It is one thing for a major supplier to ship using old newspaper for packing, another to neglect to use enough. All my shipments have been packed and received is such condition.

Well except for the replacement piece of ebony. They wrapped it in plastic, tape, paper, newspaper. Then it was put in a box twenty times bigger than the 18 inch piece of wood....

Wish they would have done that to begin with...

Oh well, they made it right and it only cost THEM about 50.00
