Europe has a growing legion of snooker fans but China has the money, lots of it. The forthcoming International Championship in Chengdu carries a top prize of £125,000, easily the highest ever awarded outside the UK.

China is such a vast place that its cities are like countries within countries – Chengdu has a population of around 14m – and they compete against each other.

This is how Barry Hearn has been able to ink deals not just for five ranking events there but also steadily increase the prize funds: none of the cities want to be seen to be lagging behind.

On the subject of Snooker, I can tell you this...
Snooker has been a BIG TV MONEY game since the 70's so it has a 40 year creditbale history behind it, which makes it a lot easier for Mr. Hearn to sell worldwide. Albeit, Snooker has suffered commercially for the last 10-15 years (or so) it is now back on the uprise courtesy of Mr. Hearn's Matchroom Promotions.

American Pool has got a life time of professional conduct and business development to even catch up with Snooker commercially imo. But you are right, China is the 'new' leading market place and has been for years.

Yeah it is a shame.
For me, American Pool is a much more interesting game, but a lot is in need of change if it's to go forward.

I think I know why this is.

In a snooker match if a player is absolutely buzzin he can play that out frame after frame possibly making many big breaks along they way. With rotation pool a player can be on fire and yet still be stymied by the break after each rack, rarely do you get to see them flow rack after rack and the drama can be short lived.
