How to bracket a tournament

In an eight player tournament bracket, single elimination, is there a specific way that the players are supposed to play each other ?

1st place Adam
2nd place Bob
3rd place Carl
4th place Danny
5th place Edward
6th place Frank
7th place Gary
8th place Harvey

Who goes in what numbered position ? And what exactly is seeding ?

Is this a tournament where those players are to be seeded from those positions, 1st thru 8th? Like playoffs in the major sports?

If so, it should be 1 vs 8, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 and 2 vs 7. From top to bottom.

You might need to flip=flop the middle two. But 1 vs 8 on top and 2 vs 7 on bottom.

In a 8 player bracket you'll have

8 vs 1
5 vs 4

6 vs 3
7 vs 2

Just trying to assert one way or the other. Is the placement of 5 & 4, and 6 & 3 bracket-wise set in stone ? Or does it very from tournament to tournament ?

Seeds 1 & 2 are separated at the ends because if the pieces fall into place according to seeding then 1 will play 2 in the finals. In the semi-finals, it should be 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. If upsets occur, then upsets occur and that's just the way of bracket play.

Take a look at the recent college basketball bracket and that gives you an idea of how seeds are separated so you have the best chance of the top teams (players) fighting it out at the end. (Of course, that didn't happen this year in college b-ball).

Yes, set in stone.

The Idea is that the #1 player gets rewarded by playing against the lowest remaining seed (if the higher seed wins each match)

1 vs 8
5 vs 4

3 vs 6
2 vs 7

Rd 2
1 vs 4
2 vs 3
