how to calculate a 5 rail billiard

There's a statement in bill Smith's book that seems to be true even with regular players, thats all I can assume with the lack of knowledge sharing here

"In the past masters jealousy guarded and horded thier secrets "

This is why American cue sports are so far behind the rest of the world, IMO. In the rest of the world there are instructors and academies that teach and train players and they rejoice when players get better. Here there has been a culture where no one wants to tell anyone anything because they might end up losing a bet. And sadly it leaked into the 3C world.

Fortunately, some of the foreign materials are becoming more available. PLUS we get to see them do it via video. I remember the comment in one of Byrnes' books about the invasion of the Europeans in 1966. It was the first time Americans saw what post-Hoppe state of the art world class 3C was. Byrnes commented that Danny McGoorty, an old time American 3C player said, after seeing a shot by Ceulemans, that he wanted to chop Ceulmans' cue ball in half because there had to be something inside it for it to do the things Ceulmans got it to do.

Byrnes' book, when it came out in the 70s was a revelation. The only book I had ever seen on pool before was the little Mosconi book. I bought the book for the pool and it got me hooked on the billiards. Now there is tons of stuff available, but it was a desert there for a long long time.

OTOH, yelling at and scolding people is probably not going to bring out more or better answers. I'm grateful for whatever I get and I am fairly aggressive about searching out things.

I am a system player. I taught myself the game by buying every book I could find. I have all of the books from: Darrel Martineau, Eddie Robbin, Robert Byrne, Sid Banner, Walt Harris, Raymond Ceulemans, Andres Efler, the list goes on. Plus... I compiled a list of web sites that have systems information. And I have iphone and android apps, and a bunch of ebooks as well. If a new system was announced tomorrow... I would be standing in line to buy it.

I live in Houston... where there are maybe 50 or so 3-cushion tables in a dozen rooms. I love the game... I love to play the game... and I even love to teach the game. Why not? Where else do new players come from? I have taught the game to many pool players and first time 3C players.

So I can say with absolute certainty that the most important thing is NOT knowing a system. The most important thing is your stroke and your aim. You must be able to make your cue ball do what you want it to... whether you play by feel or play with mathematical calculations running through your brain (like I do.)

What a system can do is validate your plan... give you a clue as to what the shot needs in order to score. But if you cannot execute what you plan - fahgedaboutit.

My standing offer: if you live or play in Houston... send me a PM... we can meet... and I can show you a system calculation for almost every shot... It will be up to you to make it.

That is one of the standard shots players will use when they warm up for a match in order to judge how the table is playing. While the system presents an ideal, the reality is that the lines vary from table to table and even change during a long match.

There is a Turkisk guy named Tuzul who has come out with a system in which you start by shooting certain calibrating shots to get an adjustment factor for the table conditions and then his system builds that adjustment into the calculations.

here is a free pdf of tuzul book
excellent resourse

because of having a table factor the system has an automatic adjustment for the table
but the formulas are alittle more complicated than othe systems for the same shot

i agree with you i shoudnt chastise the carom member but i get frustrated here in the carom section
i am spoiled at onepocket.org we freely share knowledge and discuss differences in a civil manner...:)
so when i ask for help about 3c and get no replies i let out my frustration
but sometimes it does manage to get some answers
thanks to those who do reply and try to help.....
i apologize to anyone if they take offence

i agree 100% that fundamentals are key
as you said if you cant hit where you aim forget the rest
but
if you can hit where you aim knowing systems is not a bad thing
jmho
p.s. if i ever get to houston i will take you up on your offer for lessons...:):)

Hope you do make it to Houston bbb... There is always a table to play on in this town!

I plan to publish as much system information as I can find on my website 3CushionBilliards.com

Right how I have an Instruction section that links to the YouTube accounts of some very generous players who have shared their knowledge freely. You can find these videos on YouTube on your own of course... I just hope to make it easier for players to find them by aggregating the information in one place.

Check it out:

I get suggestions from folks all the time and I'm ready to add a new article anytime I get a good lead.... hint

Thanks.
